The students will learn about the ECHR standards of human rights protection. They will also learn to analyze the developments of national public policies in historical context and in comparative perspective.
The multi-disciplinary lecture course will discuss the issues of democratic transition of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE states) that have been reflected in the case law of European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) since the accession of these countries to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The course will give a comparative overview of the case law of the ECtHR regarding compliance of the CEE states with the ECHR standards of human rights protection.
It will also include three case studies of policy areas that are crucial for understanding of compliance of transitional policies with the ECHR (the judicial system, welfare policies, and restitution and privatization policies and their economic and social consequences). The lectures will cover the following topics: 1) The history and impacts of the accession of the CEE states to the ECHR. 2) Overview of the CEE states’ compliance with the ECHR standards. 3) Structural problems in the judicial systems of the CEE states. 4) Reforms in the welfare sector. 5) Effects of restitution and privatization on the security of property rights.

This course investigates the intricate political, economic, and ecological developments in the Global East: the postsocialist spaces which have undergone political and economic transition. The course begins with an introductory lecture that provides an overview of political ecology as an academic field, highlighting current debates and tracing its emergence from critical political economy. This lecture sets the stage for the course by bridging theoretical and empirical perspectives, offering a comprehensive understanding of how political ecology examines the intersections of international political economy and ecological changes.
Throughout the course, students will explore various theoretical and political debates within political ecology, engaging with topics such as extractivism, social ecological movements, indigenous politics and resistance, authoritarian state power, and transnational neoliberal development policies. Empirical case studies from Armenia, Ukraine, Russian Sápmi, Uzbekistan, and Russia will be used to illustrate these concepts.
By the end of the course, students will gain a nuanced understanding of the specificities of political and ecological developments in the Global East. They will also learn to situate these developments within the broader context of global political economy and ecological changes.

The course support students’ argumentation skills and critical thinking. The course contributes to the development of teamwork skills (participating in group) as well as the ability to work independently (a learning diary).
Format of the course
The course will measure to 5 ECTS (participation in teaching 1 ECTS, readings and pre-assignments 1 ECTS and a learning diary 3 ECTS) and consist of one introductory lecture and six content-specific lectures. The language of instruction is English. The lectures will be held at Tampere University, City Centre Campus (the exact room to be confirmed by the university specialists later), and simultaneously streamed on Zoom.
The course will include pre-readings (1-2) and a written pre-assignment submitted through Moodle before each lecture. A written pre-assignment is designed in the format of a 'reading question,' where students are asked to reflect on the most puzzling or stimulating parts of the reading.
Each lecture will consist of a lecture part as well as group discussions based on the pre-readings and pre-assignments. The duration of each lecture is 90 minutes.
The final written assignment is a learning diary. The learning diary should be approximately 10 pages, reference at least 4 pre-readings given during the course, and can also include the content of pre-assignments (“reading question”) exercise. The course introduces students to research on power, politics and Russian art that manifest in transnational contexts by delving into specific case studies. These case studies, located beyond Russia’s territorial borders, include the Russian Pavilion at the contemporary art festival Venice Biennale, the State Russian Museum’s satellite in Malaga, a Russian fine art exhibition in China and artistic resistance at the former ‘Russia House’ during the World Economic Forum in Davos. The course will discuss and provide examples of how the Russian state and elites have accumulated power in and through art and the transnational field of art. Students will learn to discover and analyse power and politics at artistic sites and they will gain insights about the range of actors involved in the transnational field of art as well as various field-crossing and scale-exceeding dynamics of capital, power and position-takings. Students will be presented with theoretical and methodological frameworks and tools that they will be encouraged to apply in selecting and analysing relevant case studies.

The student will learn to recognise and analyse the role that art and artistic sites play in politics and accumulation of power. The intensive course will encourage students to independently apply the theoretical and methodological examples presented in the lectures in their own work. The course supports the development of critical thinking, argumentation skills and ability to work on an individual project.
The course consists of six on-campus meetings, with an option to join remotely for those who do not study at Tampere University, and two seminars on Zoom. During the two weeks of on-campus teaching, students are expected to complete assigned readings and submit a reflection on the articles via Moodle. For the final assignment, students will select individual case studies and write an essay based on their chosen case. The last two meetings of the course, organised entirely on Zoom, will be dedicated to presenting students’ individual projects, during which students will receive verbal feedback from their peers. As the final assignment, students will submit essays via Moodle that focus on the case studies they have selected.

The lecture series aims to illustrate to the students with the multi-faceted nature of Ukrainian national sentiment, the status and position of Ukraine within the 19th century dynastic empires, the struggle for statehood and nationhood in the early 20th century, significance of military heritage and the legacy of armed struggle to the national project, the paradoxical experience of Soviet era both as a scene of national catastrophes as well as national renaissance, and finally the continuity of the Ukrainian citizens’ activism and democracy movement up to the present day.
Participants will gain a broad understanding of the birth of modern Ukraine, including nationalism and civil society. They will be able to analyze and understand the history and the current events of the country and place it in the wider context of the history of Eastern Central Europe and the history of Europe in general.

The course discusses the reasons, courses of action and outcomes of the territorial border conflicts and disputes in the Finnish-Russian border areas, especially in Karelia, during the past centuries. The course sheds light on the geopolitical (strategic) interest of Russia and its predecessors in the territory of Finland and its linkages with military conquests. The course also introduces how different geographic factors influence the conduct of military operations in the forest regions of the European North. Furthermore, methods and techniques of warfare are examined. The emphasis will be on the tactical and operational levels of war. Case studies for the Part I of the lectures are chosen from medieval, early modern and modern periods to illustrate various forms of low intensity conflicts in the Finnish-Russian border zones (raids, plunder, border disputes etc.). Part II of the course concentrates on the 20 th century, especially in the features of World War II in Karelia.

The course looks at Europe–Russia relations through the resource-(inter)dependency frame that guided European foreign policy practice until 2022. The European side of the story, as seen from the German and Finnish contexts, is juxtaposed to the Russian: the course unfolds how Russia managed to utilise the interdependency frame for its imperialist objectives. Russian understanding of the nation as a “Great Power of flows”, a concept related to “energy Superpower”, is central explaining steps taken to weaponize different commodity flows. Therefore, the course also sheds light on Europe’s strategic mistakes in trying to pacify Russia.
By bringing together geoeconomical, material and environmental approaches concerning trade and interdependency, and security and violence the course discusses the possibility of a new Russia Strategy for Europe. The course discusses the need for a Russia Strategy that outlines Europe’s objectives and action both in the case of less violent but also belligerent Russia.
Objectives: The course provides a much-needed analysis how Europe in concrete terms could engage with Russia considering both European values, as well as Russia’s imperial mindset and polity. It will inform students how to understand Russia, and how to encourage both European and Russian actors to work for a common democratic and sustainable future.

Tavoite ja sisältö / Aim and content The course deals with Russia's historically diverse regional and societal structures as well as its economic and political development. Perspectives on the course are brought by e.g. state and regional governance and population development. Ethnicity and migration are analysed through (post) socialist and (post) colonial lenses. The course further explores contradictory issues of environmental and natural resources, civil society and media, and Russia as an international actor. Contemporary topics are based on the common history of the former Soviet Union. We examine Russia as a distinct transnational and global player beyond common divisions of North and South. The discussions take into account e.g. Russia’s social and political situation, dynamics in neighbouring regions and international actors such as the United Nations and European Union.

Moto: Chornobyl decoded and upgraded: 40 years after the nuclear disaster
Course outline: The course is to introduce students to major theoretical and practical frames of reconsidering the Chornobyl legacy, through an interdisciplinary approach, exploring its intersectional dimensions, technoscientific aspects, military implications, digital representations, and cinematic depictions, which contributes to examining the transformations of Chornobyl narratives over the past 40 years and provides a refreshed understanding of its evolving legacy as a nuanced comprehension of the nuclear disaster's lasting societal and environmental impacts on the region and beyond.
Learning objectives: Students are able to:
1)demonstrate an interdisciplinary understanding of contemporary perception of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, i.e. students will be able to analyze the Chornobyl legacy through multiple lenses of 40-year transformations, including environmental, social, political, technological, scientific, military, digital, and cinematic perspectives, recognizing the interconnectedness of these dimensions in understanding the event's complex legacy;
2) critically evaluate contemporary dominant nuclear narratives in the Eastern European context, i.e. students will be able to critically assess existing narratives surrounding Chornobyl, including those related to energy security, environmental sustainability, technological risk management, and the impact of digital media; they will also be able to understand how collective and prosthetic memories of the disaster are formed and shaped,
3)apply theoretical frameworks to analyze a natural/human-made catastrophe, i.e. students will be able to apply theoretical approaches as intersectionality, trauma studies, and environmental humanities to analyze the long-term social, cultural, and environmental impacts of the Chornobyl legacy in seeing the transformations of shaping its public perception and awareness for further communicating nuclear narratives in East/Central Europe and beyond.

This course examines the geopolitical and geoeconomic dimensions of contemporary Russia-China relations, introducing theoretical foundations and exploring key themes such as energy geopolitics, strategic alignments, regional competition, and economic interdependencies. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, group work, and written assignments, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the strategic dynamics shaping Russia-China interactions in the global arena.
The course is offered in the spring semester of 2026 in a hybrid format, both on-site at the City Centre Campus of Tampere University and via Zoom. Students are required to confirm their mode of participation during registration, and this selection will remain fixed throughout the course. As a general rule, students enrolled at Tampere University are expected to attend on-site unless they provide valid reasons for online participation.
Intended Learning Outcomes. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Systematically understand the dynamics of contemporary Russia-China relations.
Apply key geopolitical and geoeconomic theories to analyse Russia-China relations and beyond.
Critically assess regional competition and the limits of Russia-China cooperation in areas such as Central Asia and the Arctic.
Evaluate the impact of external factors, such as Western sanctions, in shaping Russia-China relations.
Develop and enhance analytical and reflective skills through group debates, presentations, and written assignments.

1. Class Participation and Learning Diary (20%)
•Attendance: Students may miss a maximum of one lecture with a valid reason.
•Active engagement in discussions.
•Learning diary: A short written reflection (1-2 pages) on one assigned course theme.
2. Group Presentation or Debate (40%)
•Collaborative research on a selected theme. The format (presentation or debate) will be determined based on the number and distribution of students (total, online vs onsite).

•Part I (2 pages): Synthesis of core arguments from group discussions.

The aim of the course is to acquaint the student with the history of the Polish Jews since the Middle Ages to nowadays as well as with the Jews and Judaism in Ukraine, Russia, the Baltic countries and East Central Europe. 80% of the world's Jewry lived in Poland by 1800, however, there were also quite many Jews in Ukraine and Russia, and other (Baltic, Slavic) countries till the 1940s.
Topics:
1. The Jews as a ("chosen") nation. Cultural and religious approaches.
2. The Poles/other Slavs/the Baltic people and the Jews as nations living together for 1000 years - characteristics.
3. The Jews in Europe in the Middle Ages and modern times. The Jews in Ukraine, Russia, the Baltic countries and East Central Europe.
4. The Jews' arrival in Poland in the Middle Ages: a legal/social status, restrictions and privileges.
5. Jewish culture in multicultural Poland till the 19th century: Jewish religion, law, government/autonomy, parliament, kahals, customs, traditions, professions, activities, ordinary life.
6. Sects in Judaism in Poland/Ukraine/East Central Europe in the 17th and the 18th centuries (Chasidism, Sabbateism, Jacob Frank's sect).
7. Anti-Semitism in Poland, Ukraine, Russia, the Baltic countries and East Central Europe since medieval times to the 1930s: facts and reasons. Zionism: Jewish nationalism in the 20th century.
8. Holocaust by Nazi Germany in the occupied Polish territories: "Shoah", Auschwitz-Birkenau.
9. Jewish-Polish (interwar) literature: the Polish writers of Jewish origins Julian Tuwim, Jan Brzechwa, Bruno Schulz, Janusz Korczak, Isaac Singer.
10. "Remnants: the last Jews of Poland" in homogeneous Poland since 1945 to the 21st century: assimilation, discrimination, emigration, grief, integration. The Jews in Ukraine, Russia, the Baltic countries and East Central Europe nowadays.
Learning outcomes: The student should understand the phenomenon of Poland called "a paradise for the Jews". The student should get the reasons of different attitudes of majorities towards the Jews in the mentioned countries and regions. The student should understand the diversity of Jewishness and Judaism in those countries and regions, especially in Poland, as well as the complexity of Jewish-Polish relations. The international context of long-standing anti-Semitism is presented and should be well-understood as well. The student is also familiarised with the foundations of Judaism as a religion and a way of life.
Info on assessment: All together 20 hours of lectures online. 10 lectures/topics, each for 2 h. Activating tasks for students to pass the course: active participation with reading and discussion as well as short written assignments (writing a 5-7-page essay on a topic agreed with the lecturer). Tavoite ja sisältö / Aim and content
Kurssin suoritettuaan opiskelijalla on kattava näkemys Neuvostoliiton yhteiskunnasta,
kulttuurista ja keskeisimmistä sisä- ja ulkopoliittisista kysymyksistä. Luentosarja kattaa
ajanjakson lokakuun vallankumouksesta Neuvostoliiton hajoamiseen (1917–1991).
Opiskelijat saavat kurssilla empiiristä tietoa neuvostojärjestelmän ja -kulttuurin
keskeisimmistä instituutioista (ideologia, puolue, propaganda, sensuuri ja sosialistinen
realismi) keskeisten historiallisten kokonaisuuksien kautta. Näitä olivat NEP, teollistaminen
ja maatalouden kollektivisointi, yhteiskunnan modernisoituminen, kaupungistuminen,
elintason kehittyminen sekä neuvostoyhteiskunnassa harjoitetut poliittiset rituaalit, tavat ja
kulttuurielämän tapahtumat. Kurssilla käsitellään, miten Neuvostoliitossa politiikka ja
ideologia toimivat taidetta muovaavina voimina sekä sisä- että ulkopoliittisissa yhteyksissä.
Neuvostokulttuurin osalta kurssilla käsitellään elokuvaa, kirjallisuutta, klassista ja
viihdemusiikkia, kuvataidetta sekä sivutaan teatteria.
Opiskelijat oppivat, miten poliittisen repression asteen vaihtelut vaikuttivat siihen, miten
neuvostoyhteiskunta suhtautui länteen ja miten Leninin ja Stalinin kausien suhteellisen
sulkeutuneisuuden jälkeen läntisiä vaikutteita saapui Neuvostoliittoon Hruštševin
rauhanomaisen rinnakkainelon, Brežnevin détenten sekä Gorbatšovin perestroikan aikoina
suurvaltojen välisen kilpailun ja kulttuuri- ja tiedevaihdon kautta. Neuvostoyhteiskunnan
poliittisten, ideologisten ja yhteiskunnallisten muutosten kautta kurssi tarjoaa empiirisiä ja
analyyttisiä välineitä propagandan, pehmeän diplomatian, ”soft powerin”, ”cultural
statecraftin” ja informaatiovaikuttamisen ymmärtämiseen.
Luennoilla käydään läpi myös ns. Venäjän arkistovallankumousta, joka on mahdollistanut
neuvostohistorian tutkimisen alkuperäisaineistojen avulla. Opiskelija saa kuvan siitä,
millaiset lähteet ja metodologia ovat kurssin aihepiiriä koskevan akateemisen tutkimuksen
takana. Kurssin luento-osuuden lopuksi käsitellään neuvostoajan vaikutusta Putinin ajan
Venäjään yhteiskunta-, kulttuuri- ja historiapolitiikan näkökulmista. Kurssin luennot

Opintojaksolla esitellään erilaisia slaavilaisia kieliä ja maita. Slaavilaisia kieliä ovat yleensä esittelemässä kieltä äidinkielenään puhuvat henkilöt, jotka myös tarjoavat ensikäden tietoa omista maistaan ja niiden kulttuureista.
Sen lisäksi opintojaksolla keskitytään monikulttuuriseen ja monikieliseen vuorovaikutukseen, jonka tarkoituksena on jakaa tietoa eri slaavilaisista kulttuureista. Opintojaksolla keskustellaan myös kulttuuri-identiteetin käsitteestä slaavilaisten maiden näkökulmasta - keskustelut slaavilaisten maiden historiasta, arvoista, kokemuksista pyrkivät lisäämään opiskelijoiden monikulttuurista tietoisuutta ja kykyä kriittiseen ajatteluun.

The course consists of lectures. We study historical works and historians of Ukraine published in English language or in English translation as well as additional primary sources written by experts. The course addresses core questions of how Ukraine´s statehood and identity was formed and cemented. We discover how Ukraine´s history has been impacted by economic, political, societal and international relations developments and begin our examination from the 17th century onwards. The course deals with the emergence of the Soviet Union from the perspective of Ukraine´s development and also the contribution Ukrainian historical figures made towards the USSR. We examine the post-Soviet transition towards democracy. Key topics including the Orange Revolution (2004-2005) and Euromaidan (2013-2014) uprisings as well as Nato´s 2008 Bucharest summit to shed light on the nature of development of Ukraine as a regional and international actor. We consider the relationship between Ukraine´s post-Communist development and the European Union and international politics. We examine the ongoing Russia´s war of aggression against Ukraine.

The course explores the role of ethnicity in shaping the societal and political landscapes in ex-Yugoslavia. The course challenges traditional narratives that portray ethnicity as a clear-cut dividing factor in the region, instead highlighting its fluid nature. Through lectures, readings and audiovisual materials, students will learn about how ethnicity is intertwined with other cultural dimensions, such as religion and language, which have both divided and united communities. Taking a broad and interdisciplinary approach, this course offers students a concise, informative overview of a fascinating country and region – almost a micro-history of 20th century Europe.
The course has been designed to be as inclusive as possible, and should be rewarding to students of history, political science, East European area studies, and other disciplines. The pedagogic approach is innovative, challenging, and engaging.

Operation BLOK - KGB's battle against Ukrainian national identity
This series of lectures focus on the Ukrainian generation of "Thaw" (sixtiers) and examines how the Soviet secret police launched a massive operations against the "anti-Soviet intelligentsia" of Ukraine during 1970's
The Ukrainian national identity was seen as a major threat to the Soviet ideology and Soviet state when L.I. Brezhnev became as a leader of the Communist Party in 1964. Especially, the new generation of Ukrainian dissidents such as Ivan Svitlychny, Ivan Dziuba and Vyacheslav Chornovil were active to protest in special underground magazines as Ukrainsky Visnyk. This relatively small group of national minded artists and journalists (approx. 30) were considered as deadly enemies of the existence of the Soviet rule in Ukraine; especially after the Prague's Spring 1968. On one hand, in 1972 the Soviet Union celebrated its 50th Anniversary the Soviet Union and was talking about the "our multicultural state". On the other hand, in 1972 KGB launched a massive operation against the Ukrainian national minded intelligentsia and tried to liquidate it totally (Operation BLOK). The series of lectures inspects the fates of these dissidents during 1980's and then later in 1990's when they were given an amnesty. This series of lectures gives students an inner view of the operations of KGB and the their activities during 1970's and 1980's. The method of teaching is a) lecturing b) dialectical discussions. It is most pivotal that during these discussions we are able to listen and discuss respectfully (especially when discussing sensitive topics), criticize ideas not individuals, avoid blame and inflammatory language.UH disapproves of any kind of inappropriate behaviour, bullying or harassment.

Kurssi ”Politiikka ja konfliktit Baltiasta Balkanille” jatkaa politiikkaa käsittelevää kokonaisuutta, jossa tarkastellaan jonkin tietyn alueen nykytilaa ja historian osuutta nykypolitiikassa. Kevään 2025 kohteeksi ovat valikoituneet ns. EU:n itäiset maat sekä Länsi-Balkan ja mahdollinen EU:n laajentuminen Ukrainaa myöten.
Kurssilla käsitteet politiikka ja konfliktit ymmärretään laajasti. Neljän yleisemmän esittelyluennon jälkeen osa kurssilaisista jakaantuu ryhmätöihin ja esittelee jälkimmäisessä seminaariosuudessa sekä jonkin yksittäisen maan puoluepolitiikan nykytilaa että maan identiteettiä tai identifikaatiota muovanneen konfliktin. The course introduces students to the history, politics and culture of Russia and the Soviet Union from the early 19th century to today. Main overarching themes are the interplay between liberal and conservative (at times, totalitarian) tendencies, on the one hand, and between the state and culture, on the other. Emphasis will be on Russian-language culture, but attention will be paid to the multinational character of the Russian Empire, the USSR and the Russian Federation. Main phenomena and trends will be discussed, from the “golden” and “silver” ages of Russian culture to the Soviet times, including censorship and political and cultural regimentation and the method of socialist realism, until the short period of freedom in the 1990s, and the changes and continuities in politics of culture and history in the early 21st century.
Learning goals: After completing the course students have a thorough overview of the main cultural currents and political events of 19th, 20th and early 21st century Russia and an understanding of how politics influenced culture, how culture was used to promote political aims, and how these two trends sometimes contradicted, sometimes overlapped with each other. Furthermore, students will be able to name some of the most important Russian and Soviet authors, painters, composers and film directors and understand how their works interacted with high politics and why their works have become classics. Individual and group work (in the form of an analysis of a Soviet movie) introduces the students to searching and using academic research in cultural studies, gives experience of academic co-operation and presentation, as well as practice in argumentation skills.
Assignments and assessment: The course consists of ten sessions: nine lectures and a final session, where students present their group-work analyses of Soviet films. The group work includes individual analysis with the help of research literature; participation in group work; and presenting the analysis (40 % of the grade). During the course, students write a study diary entry (1-1,5 pages) for each lecture and the final session with reflection of one’s own learning process (60 % of the grade). Attending the lectures is obligatory for a minimum of 80 %; for extra absence extra assignment will follow.

The course begins with a review of imperial Russian history and then turns to the Russian Revolutions of 1917. It then traces the course of historical development through the leadership of Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Gorbachev. While focusing on the major events of the period of Soviet rule, it also explores the nature of Soviet society and its diversity in terms of gender, nationality, and social position. It examines broad and specific explanations of why, ultimately, communism in the Soviet Union failed and the USSR collapsed. Finally, it examines the emergence of Russia and the other post-Soviet states from 1991 onwards.

This course will study the effects of the Russian invasion on the EU foreign policy, its neighbourhood policy and identify new political and societal developments in the region, specifically Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Belarus.
Learning goals: Students will learn key approaches to understanding processes, drivers and causes of social and political transformations in the region; key theories of institutional change and the EU integration and its evolution since 2022; be able to better understand the broad repercussions of the war on politics and society in Ukraine and the region.
Course outline: This course looks at how the Russian invasion has reshaped the EU's Eastern neighbourhood policy and subsequently how has the new policy affected the domestic politics and foreign policy strategies of the new EU candidate countries (Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia) and Belarus. During the course, policy responses to the war of the EU and the countries of the EU-Russia contested neighbourhood will be critically reviewed. The course will also identify new patterns in foreign policy behavior of these states and key domestic societal and policy changes.
Working methods and assessment: The course is built on lectures, seminars, in-class discussions. The course will be assessed through an essay written by students, as well as in-class participation.

Kurssin sisältö
Kurssi tarjoaa kronologisen katsauksen Viron kirjallisuuden kehitykseen ja keskeisiin suuntauksiin. Tutustut merkittävimpiin kirjailijoihin ja heidän teoksiinsa sekä niihin liittyvään kirjallisuuden tutkimukseen. Luet eri aikakausien kaunokirjallisia tekstejä viroksi tai suomeksi, ja tarkastelet niitä laajemmassa yhteiskunnallisessa ja kulttuurikontekstissa. Osana opiskelua kehität analyysi-, vuorovaikutus- ja keskustelutaitoja.

Miten kommunismin jälkeinen demokraattinen Venäjä muuttui "sekurokratiaksi"?
Vuonna 1991 NL hajosi ja sen tilalle tuli Uusi Venäjä. Tämä presidentti Boris Jeltsinin johtama maa pyrki markkinatalouteen mutta tuloksena oli poliittinen umpikuja, jonka korvasi vuonna 2000 Putinin "sekurokratia"
Ymmärtääksemme nykyisen Venäjän poliittista tilanne meidän on hyvä tarkastella sitä 9 vuoden jaksoa, jolloin Uusi Venäjä yritti löytää oman paikkansa markkinataloudessa ja kansainvälisessä yhteistyössä Lännen kanssa. Elintason äkillinen lasku, organisoidun rikollisuuden nousu, kerskakulutus kapitalismin nousu oli kommunismin jälkeiselle Venäjälle kova isku. Valtion omaisuus jaettiin niiden kesken, jotka ymmärsivät sen arvon ja maan luonnonvarat joutuivat muutamien haltuun. Seurauksena oli poliittinen kriisi, jossa maa ei päässyt irti kommunismin jälkeisistä ongelmista eikä kyennyt myöskään luomaan edellytyksiä kansalaisten hyvinvoinnille. Oligarkkien poliittisen merkityksen kasvaessa nousi Venäjällä toiveita siitä, että valtio kykenisi toimimaan päättäväisemmin. Lopulta tilanne johti siihen, että turvallisuusviranomaisten edustaja Vladimir Putin tuli pääministeriksi. Aloitettiin ulkoinen sota Tshetsheniaa vastaan ja kun Jeltsin erosi vallan otti presidentti, joka keskitti kaiken vallan itselleen ja omalle viiteryhmälleen: sekurokratialle.
Kurssilla analysoidaan sekurokratian rakennetta, sen suhdetta oligarkkeihin, liike-elämään ja kansalaisyhteiskuntaan. Samalla tutkitaan sitä miten aggressiivinen ulkopolitiikka ja uhkapolitiikka oli kudottu sekurokratian sisimpään olemukseen. Seurauksena oli 2007 ilmoitus oman linjan ajamisesta, vuonna 2008 Georgian kurittamisesta ja vihdoin vuonna 2014 Krimin ja Itä-Ukrainan valtaamisesta. Kaiken takana oli sekurokratian haave entisen Venäjän imperiumin uudelleen pystyttämisestä. Tätä poliittista projektia pyrittiin hoitamaan ensin rauhanomaisesti mutta jo vuonna 2020 lähtien sotilaallista ratkaisua suunniteltiin.

Kurssilla
Kurssi soveltuu elokuvasta kiinnostuneille opiskelijoille yleensä, mutta tarkastelee tapahtumia myös historiallisesti laajemmasta näkökulmasta. Kurssi ei edellytä aiempaa osaamista tai opintoja.
