Seminar “Tools for Transformational Research on the Belt & Road Initiative”

13.11.2019
On Wednesday 13 November 2019, the Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki organized the seminar “Tools for Transformational Research on the Belt & Road Initiative”. There was a presentation by guest speaker Daniele Brombal (Ca' Foscari University Venice) and afterwards discussion by Bart Gaens (Senior Research Fellow, Finnish Institute of International Affairs).

The presentation by Daniele Brombal (Ca’ Foscari University Venice) attracted many listeners and it gave a refreshingly new approach to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). In the first part of the lecture Brombal described the background of his research and explained some of the important concepts. Civilization as a socio-ecological process has not been looked at only by Brombal, but also by other researchers. However, Brombal is looking at it from the perspective of BRI, which is very new territory.

In the second part of the lecture Brombal talked about different projects. The Marco Polo Center was established in Italy and there have been many activities since. For example earlier this year Brombal was part of a summer school which took place in the forest where there was a session about possible future scenarios for Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

After the presentation there was discussion by Bart Gaens (Finnish Institute of International Affairs) and his comments encouraged also the students to take part in the discussion. Some of the students were interested how the for example Central Asia could be looked at in this new way. Director of Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki Julie Yu-Wen Chen pointed out how it would be useful to let more European organizations know about this, because this kind of research is also new in Europe and could be of interest to many. In the very end of the seminar Julie Yu-Wen Chen gave Daniele Brombal a gift on behalf of the Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki.
