Lecture title: “‘Glad to Make the Acquaintance of Another Antifascist’: Port Cities and the Makings of Anti-Fascist Solidarities”
Professor David Featherstone, University of Glasgow, will explore anti-fascist solidarities in Cardiff during the mid to late twentieth century. The lecture examines port cities as hubs of political activism, tracing maritime anti-fascisms, including resistance to the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, the Spanish Civil War, the Federation of Greek Maritime Unions in the 1940s, and opposition to Pinochet’s regime. It highlights transnational and gendered dynamics and the role of multi-ethnic Welshness in countering authoritarianism.
About Professor David Featherstone: Author of Resistance, Space and Political Identities (Wiley, 2008), Solidarity: Hidden Histories and Geographies of Internationalism (Zed Books, 2012), and co-editor of Anti-Fascism in Global Perspective (Routledge, 2021). He is part of Soundings: A Journal of Politics and Culture and an active trade unionist.
Roundtable Discussion:
Joining Professor Featherstone are:
Professor Peter Cole, Western Illinois University, author of Dockworker Power and co-director of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project.
Minna Henriksson, Finnish visual artist whose archival-based work addresses leftist, anti-racist, and feminist struggles, exploring marginalisation and the ideological nature of history writing.
This keynote lecture is part of the Imagining the Anti-Fascist City: Contested Geographies of Resistance and Solidarity Conference, 5-6 June, University of Helsinki.
