A quick guide to the application process

Do you want to apply to an International Master’s Programme at the University of Helsinki? This quick guide gives you a general overview of the application process.

Please note that the applications for studies starting in autumn 2020 closed on 10 Jan 2020 and the admission results have been sent to all applicants to the e-mail address given on their application form. The next application period is from 1 Dec 2020 to 15 Jan 2021 (for studies starting in autumn 2021). Please note that the instructions on this page are still for the past application round.

University of Helsinki has only one intake per academic year. Please note that the online application form is open and can be submitted only during the application period.

The application period for our International Master’s Programmes is on 3 Dec 2019 at 8:00 UTC+2 – 10 Jan 2020 at 15:00 UTC+2 (for studies starting in autumn 2020). To keep updated about the application dates and process, sign up for our Admissions Newsletter.

The academic term begins on the 1st of August each year.

You must have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent to qualify for entry to an International Master's Programme.

If you graduate after the application period, you can still apply as long as you meet all the other requirements. If you get admitted, your acceptance will be conditional and you must graduate by the date given in the admission requirements.

Please note that each Master’s Programme has its own requirements about previous studies. Your degree does not always have to be exactly in the same field as the Master’s Programme that you apply to. However, you must have completed at least some post-secondary level studies that are relevant to the programme in question.

To check the exact programme-specific requirements for the Master’s Programme that you are interested in, you need to visit the Finnish national online application system Studyinfo. You can find a direct link to this information on the website of the programme in question. To visit the programme websites, go to the list of our International Master's Programmes or search for the programme in the Degree finder.

In addition, you need to meet the English language requirements. Please see the webpage "Prov­ing your Eng­lish lan­guage skills" for further information.

When applying to an International Master’s Programme, you have to submit all the required documents as instructed.

  • If your degree was or will be awarded in one of the countries listed here, you must follow the country-specific requirements on how to submit your educational documents. Otherwise, please follow the general instructions.
  • If your educational documents are in a language other than English, Finnish or Swedish, official translations to one of these languages are required.

Make sure that all your educational documents are correctly certified and submitted as instructed by the University of Helsinki.

Please take into consideration that it might require some time to take a language test and get your educational documents certified. Therefore, it is highly recommended to start preparing your documents well in advance.

All applications to the International Master’s Programmes starting in autumn 2020 must be submitted online at the Finnish national application portal Studyinfo between 3 Dec 2019 at 8:00 UTC+2 and 10 Jan 2020 at 15:00 UTC+2.

When the application period starts on 3 Dec 2019 at 8:00 EET, find the programme you want to apply to in the Studyinfo portal. Click the link to apply and fill out the online application form. Make sure to submit all the required documents according to the given instructions.

Please note that you may submit the required documents before submitting the online application form, even before the application period starts.

Are you liable to pay tuition fees and want to apply for a scholarship? When applying to an International Master’s Programme, you can at the same time apply for a scholarship on the same application form. There are no separate scholarship application forms. Please note that the scholarships are only intended for students liable to pay tuition fees.

Once you have submitted your online application form and the required documents, your application goes through the following steps:

  • Minimum requirements
    Admission services check that your application and the supporting documents meet the minimum requirements.
  • Academic evaluation
    If your application meets the minimum requirements, it will proceed to the academic evaluation.
  • Scholarship evaluation
    If you have applied for a scholarship and are eligible, the Scholarship Committee will evaluate your application.
  • Admission results
    Admission results will be published the latest on 15 April 2020.
