The University of Helsinki’s Viikki Campus is Finland’s most prominent and extensive centre for teaching and research in the life sciences. BioPop offers the opportunity for teachers at different levels to bring their teaching groups to visit the fascinating world of life sciences in a genuine teaching and research environment.
The goal of the study visit is to support the pupil’s understanding of and interest in the biosciences. During the visits, we focus on inquiry-based learning, where the key objective is to help the pupils think and discover things independently.
The visit can include both 1) the observation of studies and research and 2) laboratory research.
OPTION 1: OBSERVATION OF STUDIES AND RESEARCH IN VIIKKI (UPPER-SECONDARY SCHOOLS)
A brief general introduction where the biosciences are presented comprehensively and engagingly can be organised during the study visit. The introduction will describe study in the field, employment prospects as well as research in the biosciences at Viikki. In addition to the general introductions, groups can visit the microbiology and biochemistry laboratories, the plant science herbaria and the zoological collections. If the visitors are particularly interested in a specific topic or major subject, we will do our best to accommodate any wishes and goals the group may have.
OPTION 2: LABORATORY RESEARCH VISIT IN VIIKKI (COMPREHENSIVE AND UPPER-SECONDARY SCHOOLS)
We arrange visits for comprehensive and upper-secondary school pupils where they can do brief experiments or research work on the Viikki Campus. On such visits, an expert guide can offer an in-depth look at microbes, enzymes or the structure of plants and animals, for example. During the spring and autumn, it is also possible to examine the diverse natural specimens in the Viikki Arboretum. Groups of upper-secondary pupils who are interested in the topic may also participate in laboratory work in molecular biology.
