Instructions and Tips

Practical instructions for visitors at the Hyytiälä station. More accurate content will be provided after the new buildings will become operational in 2023. Until then, the older ones still remain in use.
Field courses and walking tours

It is strongly advisable to bring your own weatherproof gear for field excursions and working outdoors. The station has only a limited choice of items to borrow with no guarantee of fit and condition.

Dining

The regular dining hours are:

  • breakfast Mon - Fri 7 - 8
  • lunch Mon - Fri 11 - 12
  • afternoon coffee Mon - Fri 13:30 - 13:50
  • dinner, only in summer and during some events, Mon - Thu 16:30 - 17:30

Adjustments are possible. Visitor groups and course students often have their own schedule. Weekend meals and other special arrangements can also be requested.

Individual meals can be paid immediately at the canteen. Group payments can be arranged as agreed. An appropriate student ID card entitles a meal subsidy for one meal per day.

Cooking

The cabinet in the new dining building will be equipped with possibilities for making and storing your own food. The old timber buildings also include full kitchen facilities for their occupants.

Laundry

Starting from spring 2023, the warm machinery hall will serve as a place for washing and drying laundry. There is a fee for washing machine. Another drying room can be found downstairs on the lakeside of the new dining building.

Pets

Please negotiate the arrangements beforehand. There is an extra fee for pets and you must check in advance if there are rooms available suitable for pets.

Spare time

Possibilities for spending spare time include:

  • Nearby conservation areas and hiking tracks
  • Tiedepolku (in Finnish only)
  • Climate whirl - outdoor art
  • Frisbee golf course, starts adjacent to Tiedepolku staring point
  • Self-guided walk using a mobile device
  • Lakeside saunas
  • A barbecue hut between the lakefront saunas (for rent).
  • Fields suitable for football and beach volley
  • Skiing tracks usually from late January to early March
  • A barbecue place in the vicinity of old courtyard
  • A scenic campfire place Makkarakallio about 500 m along a lakeshore track from the small sauna
  • Magazines, forestry literature, scientific journals and a handful of novels
Saunas

The current sauna time slots can be seen on the noticeboards or requested at the office. Both lakeside saunas are available for occupants in summer. The larger one can take 15-20 and the smaller one 4-6 persons at a time on the sauna bench. By taking turns and spending occasional time cooling off ensures a comfortable stay for even a larger group. Private slots can also be reserved.

Vehicles

A limited choice of bicycles is available for rent and can be booked from the station office. In summer, most bikes are reserved for ongoing field courses. Other vehicles are intended for work-related use by the university staff.

Payments

Individual meals can be paid immediately at the canteen. Accommodation and other payments will be handled through the office.
