Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility FinBIF

Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility (FinBIF) compiles Finnish biodiversity information to one single service for open access sharing.

Laji.fi-portal invites you to browse wide range of information on species, their occurrences, distribution and scientific collections and to record and share your own observations.

Collecting and sharing species observation data

FinBIF maintains a data warehouse where biodiversity data based on original observations is copied to from the databases of partner organisations. Primary observation details include species names, location data, observation time and observer names. In addition to observation data collected for various purposes, related metadata will be published. Metadata helps data users evaluate the viability of each dataset.

Maintaining the national binomial nomenclature and taxonomy

FinBIF maintains and shares national taxonomic nomenclatures based on the latest scientific data. Without mutually agreed “reference nomenclatures”, finding and connecting biodiversity data from the portal is extremely rudimentary. What makes the task challenging is the fact that, according to estimates, Finland alone has approximately 55,000 different species, in addition to which there may be several (in some cases several hundred) synonyms for the scientific name of any known species in the portal data.
