The HELSUS Media group (PI Susanna Lehvävirta, coordinator Sini Holopainen and working group) received good news at the end of the year when the Kone Foundation gave a grant funding for project that aims to create and strengthen cooperation between sustainability researchers and Finnish journalists.
The project "Media on Planetary Boundaries - Researchers and Journalists Enabling a Sustainable Future" received a total of €230 600 for a three-year project. The idea for the project came from the HELSUS Media Group, which has been discussing, developing and working for almost two years to promote the visibility of sustainability science and researchers in the Finnish media.
The grant will be used to create collaboration between journalists and researchers by offering workshops and training around strong sustainability, including perspectives on systems thinking, multi-disciplinary sustainability, planetary boundaries and sufficiency. The project will focus on how the media could increase coverage of the sustainability transformation and what journalists and researchers can do to increase systems thinking, holistic and solution-oriented content in the Finnish media. Towards the end of the project, the aim is to take the knowledge accumulated in the project to sustainability science institutes abroad to inspire them to increase cooperation between researchers and the media.
The project will start in 2025 and will recruit reinforcement from the media sector.
