Studying

At the University of Helsinki, sustainability science can be studied on both Bachelor's and Master's level. Moreover, several doctoral programmes offer research opportunities in different areas of sustainability.

Sustainability is one of the University of Helsinki’s core priorities. It is embedded in education, research, campus operations, and societal engagement. There is a growing demand in society for professionals who understand sustainability. The university's education is grounded in scientific knowledge and aims to deepen the understanding of today’s complex sustainability challenges.

The sustainability science students develop into professionals with strong systems thinking, strategic action skills, and the ability to communicate effectively.

At the bachelor's level, sustainability-related topics can be studied through the Multidisciplinary Environmental Module, which is open to all university students. The module focuses on environmental and sustainability themes, and most of the courses are taught in Finnish.

At the master’s level, sustainability science is offered through two international programmes:

  • Environmental Change and Global Sustainability (ECGS)
  • Urban Studies and Planning

Doctoral-level studies can be pursued in several doctoral programmes with research areas related to themes such as natural resources, the environment, and society.
