Gender studies conducts critical research that breaks norms and challenges hierarchies. It draws strength from the communal nature of the discipline, as well as the free exchange of ideas in conferences, seminars and the corridors of the University.
Research in gender studies is tightly linked with international and Finnish feminist studies. The research conducted by the unit is of a high international standard, genuinely multidisciplinary and based on multiple voices. The unit is in dialogue with several disciplines and participates in various scientific and public debates. The unit conducts multidisciplinary research particularly on the boundaries of cultural and social studies.
Hilma is a network for eight gender studies units in Finland, their undergraduate and graduate students, teachers and researchers, as well as administrators. Hilma is a window into gender and women’s studies also for those outside the academia. Hilmas core values are quality and productivity.
