Institute of Biotechnology and Viikki campus

The Institute of Biotechnology (BI) is an international research unit within the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) of the University of Helsinki. Research at BI is multidisciplinary and at the highest international level. Our group is part of the BI research programs Genomics and evolutionary biology and  Cell and tissues dynamics

The institute offers an international, inspiring, and supportive research environment, along with excellent research facilities including in-house state-of-the-art technologies in imaging and genomics. We also have close connections to the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and many groups of the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology research program.

The Institute of Biotechnology (BI) is located on the Viikki campus, roughly 10 km (30 minutes by bus) from the city center and next to the nature conservation area Vanhankaupunginlahti and the arboretum of the University.

Still not sure about coming to the University of Helsinki? Here are 10 more reasons!

Living in Helsinki and Finland

Helsinki is among the world’s most livable cities. It is a modern, clean and very lively city directly by the sea, with beautiful architecture and large parks and forests. Finland holds the rank of the happiest country in the world according to the UN World Happiness Report — for the fourth consecutive time. Finland is a member of the EU, almost everybody can speak English, it has high-quality free schooling, generous family benefits, and excellent healthcare.

Finland has beautiful nature, is the most forested country in Europe, the "Land of a Thousand Lakes" (although tens of thousands might have been more accurate), and is one of the countries with the cleanest air in the world. Finland has strong seasonal contrasts with wonderful summers with long days and cold, snowy winters that offer however the opportunity to see northern lights, to do a lot of winter sports, and to fully enjoy the recent addition to the UNESCO cultural heritage list: the Finnish sauna! Finland has a rich culture, with many fascinating customs, traditions, events, and festivals. But come and see for yourself ...

Funding opportunities

Within the European Union and in Finland there are plenty of external funding opportunities for students and postdocs. They often do not only support you financially but also include network activities that are very beneficial for your career. We are happy to help you in developing your own research idea, host you here in the IEB lab at the Institute of Biotechnology, welcome you as a part of our team, and support your project along the way. Your interests and research topics should roughly fit within the theme of the lab but we are very open to novel and out-of-the-box ideas. Please find a list of funding opportunities below and feel free to contact Claudius, if you are interested or have further questions.
