Looking for a traineeship in a research project?

Internships / traineeships at the Station offer you the chance to gain experience working in a wide range of research projects and it is possible to have lodging at no cost to you in the Station's dormitories. For those accepted to the program, we aim that the experience is one in which you will grow in your independence as a scientist and give you many opportunities to put theory into practice and gain skills that will be useful in your career.

You can apply for a internship at Lammi Biological Station if you are university student looking for internship position, or if you have just graduated and you have Erasmus funding. Interns coming outside of University of Helsinki, will apply for visiting student status from University of Helsinki.

Usually inters serve as research assistants for various research groups or individual researchers, and their job description naturally varies depending on the type of research. Interns’ most common duties include the collection and analysis of data.

Minimum duration of internship is 2 months, however students from University of Helsinki are also accepted for shorter periods. Internship placement is easier to find if you can stay between 4-6 months, even longer. Also flexibility with timing increases changes of finding internship position

Prospective interns must apply using an application form.

Currently no vacant positions for spring - summer 2024

However, something may come up. You may also apply for fall - winter, however we don't currently know what field assistant positions will be open.

We will take into consideration the interests of applicants and connect them with research accordingly. The number of traineeships is limited, with the greatest need for trainees during the spring and summer fieldwork periods.

Traineeships provide an excellent opportunity to familiarise yourself with the work of researchers in practice. During traineeships, trainees learn skills important for researchers, which are difficult to learn under circumstances other than practical work. Working hours in traineeships are flexible.

At any given time, there are roughly six to 20 trainees at Lammi Biological Station. They are an integral part of the work community, enabling the compilation of more extensive datasets. Many trainees return to the station to work on their theses. Accommodation at the station is free of charge for trainees, but a small fee is charged for lunch, laundry shifts and sauna use.

What our interns say about the program

Below is some feedback from interns about their experiences at LBS

"It was one of the best things I have ever done in my life. I will leave with the biological station in my mind and in my heart."

"It is an experience that should be offered to everyone starting a career in science. It's the best approach to what working in research actually is. Personally, it has been one of the most enriching experiences, helping to decide what kind of career I'd like to follow, and growing as a person."

"It was a great and interesting time and I'm really glad that I came here. I learned a lot of new things, especially in the ecology topics"

"I was able to build my own research project, and it helped me realize how hard it is to have a robust experiment in the field. I enjoyed a lot being so close to the nature and to be able to study it. Living with PhD students also helped me to figure out what a PhD work is like. I would like to thank-you a lot for my time here, where I really felt good"

"The last three months made me forget about everything else except for this place. I have had a really nice time at Lammi during and after work. It is such a nice place and I am considering coming back to Finland and Lammi in the near future!"

"One of the my greatest experiences of a lifetime where I did not only learn a lot about science but also about myself. Thanks a lot!"

"I had an amazing time. I came here in a place with amazing people, nice work a beautiful environment and so much more! It has helped me to evolve and grow a lot."

"I had an amazing time during the three months and learnt a lot. Since I didn't have any experience in labwork. It's a shame I need to go home."
