Saunas

The Kilpisjärvi Biological Station has two saunas.

Lakeside sauna

The lakeside sauna is located on the shore of Lake Kilpisjärvi. The sauna can accommodate five to six people at one time. The sauna includes a steam room and washing facility as well as a common room, kitchen and swimming dock. The lakeshore sauna is primarily heated outside the frost season.

The station staff heats the sauna and bathwater on weekdays. On weekends, sauna users are responsible for heating the water. The hot-water cauldron is heated with wood. You should start heating the water roughly an hour before the start of your sauna slot. In the peak period, we organise a public sauna slot a couple of times per week.

Main building sauna

The entrance to the sauna in the basement of the main building can be found near the foot of the staircase in the lobby. The sauna is electric and can accommodate four people at a time.

Visitors are responsible for switching on the sauna approximately 30 minutes before their slot is due to begin. The duration of a single sauna slot is one hour.

Sauna booking

In the peak period, students and researchers have two weekly public slots for the lakeshore sauna. The public slots are indicated in the booking list on the station bulletin board.

Groups can book slots at the time of booking accommodation. Otherwise, slots can be booked in the booking list by the door.
