Arts and applied arts play a key role in everyone’s growth

Professor Lauri Väkevä advocates the significance of education in arts and applied arts in Finnish society.

What are your research topics?

I primarily investigate the philosophical and theoretical starting points of arts and applied arts education. I am particularly interested in the significance of the arts in society. My research is also oriented towards the philosophy of education, popular culture and digital learning environments.

Where and how does the topic of your research have an impact?

I hope my research will contribute to the increased recognition of the significance of arts and applied arts education in Finnish society. Arts and applied arts have a key role in everyone’s learning and growth. Acknowledging this role helps to develop Finnish education and promotes its impact and sustainability.

What is particularly inspiring in your field right now?

The breaking down of academic boundaries and collaboration between research fields! Teacher training serves as an important forum for multidisciplinary activities in both research and higher education. It is also great that, in this era of global problems, young people are looking for their own channels of societal engagement and are able to critically examine questions related to education.
