This year marks 50 years since the publication of the report Limits to Growth. Published by the Club of Rome in 1972, the report is acknowledged as one of the key inspirations of the modern environmental movement. The report’s key message is that economic and population growth cannot continue at the same pace without serious environmental problems and societal collapses in this century. Despite the warnings, harmful developments to the environment and societies have continued globally.
To celebrate the reports’ 50th anniversary, the key author of the report, professor emeritus Jorgen Randers, arrived in Helsinki in September.
The main event of his visit was the Where are the limits? event in the center of Helsinki, Tiedekulma, Thu 22 September 2022, from 13:00 to 15:00 (event details below). Randers discussed where the original report, which time horizon extended to 2022, got it right and which of the predictions have not come true as the authors expected.
The event was open for all, held in English and organized by HELSUS, Sitra, Kela, and Club of Rome Finland.
