There is a wide range of sustainability science related research in Aalto University. The ongoing collaboration includes seminars, courses and discussion events on topical issues of city planning and development and the planning of joint research projects. The most important collaboration between Aalto University and HELSUS is the annual international conference Sustainability Science Days. Urban research (e.g. architecture, urban and spatial planning and real estate research) in Aalto University has already well-established collaboration with the University of Helsinki and City of Helsinki within the umbrella of Urban Academy.
City of Helsinki is a partner via Urban Academy and essential co-operator for the Urban thematic. Also other forms of collaboration will be initiated such as joint student projects, living labs etc.
Active civil society is a key driver for sustainability transformation. Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science collaborates with actors from the civil society who work for similar goals. For example, HELSUS has collaborated with WWF Finland and UNA Finland.
Finnish Environment Institute focuses the sustainability of societal development paths by combining knowledge and expertise from many disciplines. Collaborating with Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science is thus in the focus of SYKE’s strategy both with respect to the focus of SYKE’s activities and the way in which SYKE works. Thematically SYKE focuses on, for example, Climate change mitigation and adaptation; Sustainability of consumption and production; Maintaining ecosystem services and biodiversity; Sustainability of land use and the built environment, which are also the topics of our Institute. The collaboration will include joint seminars, research projects and well as joint positions.
The TH Global Sustainability Foundation is founded by President Tarja Halonen. TH Foundation works in collaboration with Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science.
Private sector is a key player for sustainability transformation. Company engagement may happen in various ways. Co-production of sustainability solutions is a process of mutual benefit. In collaboration with Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science, companies can open a novel way for developing their businesses while at the same time contribute by creating new solutions to sustainability transformations. The interdisciplinary and diverse partner network enables the companies to find new ventures through research, product development, customer research and cooperation networks.
There are several Finnish ministries that play an essential role in Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science, particularly taking part in co-production of research processes and in science-policy platforms. These include eg. Ministry of the Environment, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Ministry of Transport and Communications.
Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science works in close collaboration with Forum for Environmental Information, a science –policy platform.
Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science works in close collaboration with the National Committee for Global Change Research Future Earth Finland (FES), and FES office is partly located at the Institute.
Luke portrays sustainability in its strategy and research agenda in various ways. This starts from Luke’s vision, which emphasizes the need to build a society that is based on sustainable bioeconomy. Furthermore, all Luke’s four thematic programmes, which are the major vehicle to direct Luke’s research, address a broad set of ecological, economic and socio-cultural sustainability issues. For example, the thematic programme Innovative Food Chain analyses the sustainability of the food chain from field to fork and the thematic programme Sustainable Bio-based Economy in the Society looks sustainability from the decision-making point of view, assessing sustainability impacts of policies and developments in the market. The collaboration with Luke will include joint seminars, research projects and well as joint positions.
Sitra is working with processes related to experiments, fundamental changes that are shaking up Western societies and capacities for renewal at the societal and individual levels.
Past collaboration between Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science and Sitra includes Sitra Megatrends 2016 (in Finnish) event. Sitra’s role in Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science will be associated with co-production approach and enhancing sustainability experiments.
SDSN Northern Europe gathers the regions’ knowledge institutions linking knowledge to action for society’s achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). By connecting the Nordic knowledge institutions we can communicate what sustainability is all about, promote joint learning and sustainable solutions.
The Institute and SDSN Northern Europe work together in organizing events and workshops such as the Pathways to Sustainability Transformation Science Day in May 2017.
The Finnish National Commission on Sustainable Development is a forum gathering the significant actors on sustainable development together. Its tasks include eg. promoting cooperation to achieve the sustainable development goals as well as accelerating the implementation of Agenda2030.
