The discipline of clinical chemistry and haematology is responsible for academic basic, doctoral and continuing education in the field. Basic instruction is organised for students of medicine and dentistry, as well as for students in the Master’s Degree Programme in Translational Medicine. In addition, the discipline is responsible for educating specialists in clinical chemistry and for the specialist training in clinical chemistry included in the degree of Licentiate of Philosophy.
The clinical chemistry unit conducts research of a high standard in the field, providing opportunities for completing advanced studies, clinical practice and postgraduate research education. The department conducts close cooperation with the clinical chemistry and haematology unit of HUSLAB and various specialities.
During basic instruction, students will familiarise themselves with the most common clinical chemistry tests and their use in health care. The subject matters covered include the organisation of laboratory operations in Finland, quality management in laboratories, the collection of venous blood samples and point-of-care testing.

Research in clinical chemistry and haematology is focused on translational cancer research, coagulation disorders, myocardial damage research and the laboratory diagnostics of biomarkers.
