Coordinating academic of a doctoral researcher

Faculty Council of the Faculty of the Biological and Environmental Sciences has decided in its meeting on 25 August 2026 new criteria for coordinating academics:

1. Doctoral thesis supervisors cannot also serve as coordinating academics for their doctoral researchers.
2. All professors, associate professors, university lecturers, senior university lecturers, and docents employed by the faculty can serve as coordinating academics. Staff from research institutions with partial employment with the faculty can also act as coordinating academics.
3. These changes apply to new doctoral researchers, i.e., those who receive their right to study after September 1, 2026. For doctoral researchers who received their right to study earlier, coordinating academics can be changed if the parties involved consider it necessary.

Duties of the coordinating academic:

• Signs the application to pursue a doctoral degree in UH
• When submitting the thesis to the Faculty for pre-examination she/he proposes the pre-examiners, the opponent, the Faculty member(s) (if needed) and the custos

• If there are changes to the supervision arrangements during the doctoral research, the coordinating academic ensures that the doctoral researcher receives a new supervisor(s).
