Democracy as a form of governance and value system has globally encountered serious internal and external challenges, especially during the past decade.1 The growing popularity of right-wing populism, diminished interest in elections and party politics, the systematic spread of disinformation and the new global advance of authoritarianism and militarism shake the foundations of contemporary democratic political systems. At the same time, existential threats, such as the climate catastrophe, biodiversity loss, and threats over nuclear war, require swift political action and fundamental social and cultural change.
Democracy literally means rule by the people (in Greek: demos, 'people' and kratos, 'rule'). In Finland, democracy has traditionally been translated as “the power of the people” (in Finnish: kansanvalta). In the conference, we ask how “the people”, “power” and “education” relate to each other historically, philosophically and conceptually. What opportunities have education and education offered, or offer today, to promote and develop democratic values? Democratic education is often considered a prerequisite for a functioning democratic society and a democratic culture. Democracy education is also often highlighted as a solution to societal and global problems such as political polarization. At the same time, democratic education is often criticized for euro-, andro- and ethnocentrism and colonialism. How should education be renewed to respond to the internal and external challenges of democracy?
The proposals can approach the theme historically or philosophically, for example from the following perspectives:
Professor Johannes Drerup
Institut für Allgemeine Erziehungswissenschaft und Berufspädagogik, TU Dortmund, Germany
Drerup is professor of philosophy of education and educational theory at TU Dortmund. His research interests include the concept of toleration and liberal democracy/democratic education, philosophy of education and educational theory, philosophy of childhood, and political and moral philosophy. He is the editor of the books “Liberal Democratic Education: A Paradigm in Crisis” (2022) and “Toleration and the Challenges to Liberalism” (2020).
Professor Katariina Holma
Faculty of Education, University of Oulu
Holma is a professor of philosophy and theory of education at the University of Oulu. Her work focuses on theories and philosophies of citizenship education and democracy, and the philosophy of science in educational research. She is the editor of the books “Learning, Philosophy, and African Citizenship” and “Practices of Citizenship in East Africa: Perspectives from Philosophical Pragmatism”.
Associate Professor Christopher Martin, Okanagan School of Education, University of British Columbia, Canada
Martin is an Associate Professor of Philosophy of Education at the Okanagan School of Education at The University of British Columbia. His areas of research interest include the aims of education and education for deliberative democracy. His recent work has begun to focus on the ethics of educational institutions in civil society. He is the author of “The Right to Higher Education: A Political Theory” (2022) and “Education in a Postmetaphysical World: Rethinking educational policy and practice through Jürgen Habermas’ Discourse Morality” (2014).
Send your proposal of a maximum of 500 words by 28.2.2023, to kahifi2023@helsinki.fi. Notification acceptance will be sent during March 2023. The duration of the presentations is 20 minutes, followed by a 10-minute discussion. You can send the proposal in Finnish, Swedish or English. There is no fee to the conference, but the conference dinner and other catering will be self-financed by the attendees.

Temat för sommardagarna som ordnas av nätverket för pedagogikens historia och filosofi år 2023 är Demokratin och pedagogiken i förändring. Demokratin har som statsform och värdesystem speciellt under det gångna årtiondet stött på allvarliga inre och yttre utmaningar globalt. 1 Högerpopulismens växande popularitet, ett förminskat intresse för val och partipolitik, det systematiska spridandet av desinformation och den nya globala frammarschen av autoritarism och militarism skakar de samtida demokratiska politiska systemens grundval. Samtidigt kräver existentiella hot, som klimatkatastrofen, artutrotningen och kärnvapenhot, snabba politiska handlingar och en grundläggande social och kulturell förändring.
Med utgångspunkt i den ovanom beskrivna historiska och samhälleliga situationen, koncentrerar sig detta års sommardagar på demokratins historia, nuläge och framtid i förhållande till frågor gällande pedagogik och utbildning. Demokrati betyder bokstavligen folkstyre (på grekiska: demos, ’folk’ och kratos, ’styre’). I konferensen frågar vi hur ”folket”, ”styret” och ”pedagogiken” förhåller sig till varandra historiskt, filosofiskt och begreppsligt. I Finland har man traditionellt talat om folkstyre (finska: kansanvalta) istället för demokrati – när och varför har man i förhållande till pedagogik börjat tala om demokrati? Hurudana möjligheter har pedagogiken och utbildningen erbjudit, eller erbjuder än idag, för att befrämja och utveckla demokratiska värderingar? Demokratifostran anses ofta vara en förutsättning för ett fungerande demokratiskt samhälle och en demokratisk kultur. Demokratifostran lyfts också ofta fram som en lösning på samhälleliga och globala problem som politisk polarisering. Samtidigt kritiseras ändå demokratifostran för att vara euro-, andro- och etnocentriskt samt kolonialt. Hur borde pedagogiken förnyas för att besvara de inre och yttre utmaningarna som riktas mot det demokratiska beslutsfattandet?
Vi välkomnar alla forskare inom pedagogikens historia och filosofi till sommardagarna med förhoppningen om att få en mångfald av perspektiv att komma tillsammans och bli hörsammade samt diskuterade. De presentationer som erbjuds till konferensen kan närma sig temat historiskt eller filosofiskt, till exempel ur följande synvinklar:

Drerup är professor i pedagogikens filosofi och teori vid Dortmunds tekniska universitet.
