In the second quarter of the 21st century, we live in an increasingly insecure world. Many global challenges—ranging from rising inequality to climate change—contribute to the proliferation of conflicts and pose major risks to the international security infrastructure. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has turned into a protracted major war which threatens European security and has led to a remarkable transformation of European defense. The ongoing global turmoil aggravates global insecurity with devastating consequences for societies, individuals and regions.
The 25th Aleksanteri Conference will address these issues by analysing responses to the challenges of insecurity in Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia. We invite interdisciplinary research at the levels of states and societies in the region and beyond. In particular, the conference will focus on the sources and mechanisms of resilience of countries, communities, and individuals in the face of these challenges.
The conference marks 30 years since the Aleksanteri Institute was established in 1996, and it will be the 25th Aleksanteri Conference organized annually since 2001, bringing together scholars and experts in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. The conference will be organised by the Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki as part of the EU-funded CENTREPEACE project, in cooperation with our partners at Masaryk University in Brno and the Peace Research Institute Oslo.
The annual conference call will be announced in mid-February 2026. The conference will take place 21–23 October 2026.
The language of the conference is English. The Conference website will be published before announcing the conference call with more information.
More information on the schedule, Call for Papers, and practical issues will be available on the Conference website, published before the Conference Call at the beginning of 2026.
