Societal impact

The Aleksanteri Institute has a strong mission to promote research based knowledge of Russia and Eastern Europe also in the public discourse. We are not a think tank, but we see it as our responsibility to provide the political actors, public services and business with expertise related to social, political and cultural development in the area.

The Aleksanteri Institute arranges dozens of open seminars and discussion fora annually reaching close to 2000 participants. We also facilitate the cooperation of the Embassies in Helsinki by organising a bi-annual series of roundtable discussions for diplomats. Our researchers and experts frequently provide briefings to decision makers on all political levels and wings. We also publish a series of expert opinions on current matters to be used in policy-making, Aleksanteri Insight.

When visiting Finland, the representatives of political or administrative bodies of Russian, Eastern European and Asian countries as well as non-governmental organisations often also pay a visit to the Aleksanteri Institute. We are proud to be able to encourage open dialogue and give room to different voices of societies in complex and contradictory political situations. Panel discussions and lectures are usually open to the public and can be found via the University of Helsinki calendar.

Our researchers are active commentators in the Finnish and international media. If you are looking for an expert to interview on an issue regarding Russia or Eastern Europe, take a look at our staff pages and do not hesitate to contact us!
