Employment programme for people with disabilities
The University of Helsinki has launched an employment programme for people with disabilities as part of the University’s disability inclusion theme year. In the spirit of positive action, the programme will recruit people with disabilities to roles in the University's units from the beginning of 2023.

The programme is part of the University of Helsinki sustainability and responsibility plan and will be implemented as a pilot project in collaboration with the Finnish Disability Forum. The programme will provide the University with important information on how recruitment processes should be developed further from the perspective of accessibility.

UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

According to the Convention, “persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.”

The article 27 of the Convention provides for the right of persons with disabilities “to work on an equal basis with others; this includes the right to the opportunity to gain a living by work freely chosen or accepted in a labour market and work environment that is open, inclusive and accessible to persons with disabilities.”

The University of Helsinki wishes to take part in promoting the employment of people with disabilities as well as equality in working life.

The employment programme was launched as a pilot project as part of the University’s theme year of disability inclusion.

Vice-Rector Tom Böhling comments: “We’ve had a very active disability inclusion theme year. Already at this stage, I would like to thank everyone who has participated! I also encourage the various units to take part as much as they can in the recruitment opportunity provided by this employment programme – it will be worth it.”

Anyone with a disability or long-term disease affecting their fitness for work based on their own evaluation can apply to positions opened through the programme.
