Qualification requirements for teaching and research positions

The general qualification requirements for University positions, specific qualification requirements for managerial positions and the qualification requirements for teaching and research positions are determined in the Regulations of the University of Helsinki. In general, an appointee to any University position must possess the training, experience and language skills required for the successful completion of related duties. Such requirements will be separately determined for each position before recruitment commences.

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top-level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents. Holders of professorships shall also be required to have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.

An appointee to the position of research director or senior curator shall hold equivalent qualifications as an appointee to a professorship, but when considering qualifications, special attention shall be paid to scientific work, the efficient leadership of a research group, success in obtaining external research funding and evidence of international research cooperation.

An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills required for the position. In addition, the appointee shall have the ability and motivation to pursue an academic career, as demonstrated by publications and other means. When assessing the applicants’ qualifications, attention shall be paid not only to research work and teaching qualifications, but also to success in the acquisition of external research funding as well as international scholarly work and other international experience.

An appointee to the position of university lecturer or clinical instructor shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations. A person who has completed an applicable Licentiate degree and is thoroughly familiar with the field of the position may, however, be appointed as a clinical instructor.

An appointee to the position of university researcher, senior researcher, research coordinator or curator shall hold a doctoral degree and have evidence of scholarly research work as well as the teaching skills necessary for the position. The positions of university researcher and senior researcher shall require the ability to lead a research group and obtain supplementary research funding. The position of research coordinator shall require, in particular, the ability to administer research projects and their finances. When selecting the appointee, scholarly work outside Finland and evidence of international cooperation shall be given particular consideration.

An appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. The position of postdoctoral researcher is typically 3–5 years in duration.

An appointee to the position of university instructor shall hold an applicable second-cycle degree and have teaching experience. Pedagogical training and the ability to produce learning material and provide diverse teaching shall be particularly appreciated. The use of the title of “university instructor” is limited to duties which involve practical instruction.

An appointee to the position of doctoral student shall hold a second-cycle degree and have an approved research proposal. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation, as demonstrated in previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal. A student who is pursuing postgraduate studies alongside undergraduate studies may also be appointed as a doctoral student if such an arrangement is based on a confirmed postgraduate system in the faculty.

The goal of a specialising doctor/dentist/veterinarian is to attain specialisation in a field of medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine. Some of the work hours are to be used for specialisation studies.

Only an undergraduate student may be employed as research and teaching assistant. The work should be related to the person’s studies. If the work duties are not study related, the employee will be included among support service and expert staff as a technical assistant, for example.

When the language of instruction is Swedish, the language proficiency recommended for successfully attending to the duties of the position corresponds with level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At the faculty’s discretion, level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages may be accepted as a minimum Swedish language proficiency requirement.

During the application process, language proficiency is demonstrated with documents, an interview and a teaching demonstration. If needed, applicants may be requested to provide further clarification of their language proficiency.

When needed, language proficiency can be verified in the following ways

  • A Civil Service Language Proficiency Certificate, a National Certificate of Language Proficiency or Swedish language proficiency demonstrated through studies can be used as part of demonstrating Swedish language proficiency in the following manner:
  • Civil Service Language Proficiency Certificate: excellent oral and written skills (C 2), good oral and written skills (C 1)
  • National Certificate of Language Proficiency: skill level 6 (C 2), skill level 5 (C 1)
  • Studies:
    • Education completed in Swedish and a maturity test completed at a higher education institution in Swedish/a matriculation examination with at least magna cum laude approbatur in Swedish as a native language/a matriculation examination with at least eximia cum laude approbatur in Swedish as a second language (C 2)
    • Education completed in Swedish/a maturity test completed at a higher education institution in Swedish/a matriculation examination with a passing grade in Swedish as a native language/a matriculation examination with at least magna cum laude approbatur in Swedish as a second language (C 1)

Instead of or alongside a certificate, Swedish language proficiency can also be demonstrated in other ways. In assessing applicants, language proficiency will be taken into account both when assessing applicants’ qualifications for appointment to the position in question and their mutual ranking.
