If you are interested in student exchange at the University of Helsinki, you should start by contacting the International Office at your home university.
You can apply to the University of Helsinki as an exchange student if there is a valid student exchange agreement between your home university and the University of Helsinki, and you have been nominated by your home university. We welcome all students and we also offer services for disabled students.

After your Home University has nominated you for student exchange at UH, you can follow the instructions below.
The application round for the spring semester 2016 starts on August 17, 2015.
The application round for the academic year 2016/2017 starts in March, 2016.

You start the application process by registering online via the Mobility Online portal. Mobility Online will guide you forward step-by-step.
Please note that during the time when applications are processed, queries concerning the status of an individual application will not be answered. You can follow up the proceeding of your application through your Mobility Online application account. Please note also that applications will only be processed after the closing of the application period.
During application process you will complete an online application on the Mobility Online application system. The online application and the application enclosures will first be reviewed by the International Exchange Services of the University of Helsinki. After they have been reviewed, they will be sent to the relevant faculties, where the final decision regarding approval will be made.
The application consists of the application form, a motivation letter, a learning agreement, a transcript of records and a language certificate. From August 2015 onwards exchange applicants (except visiting students) can also apply for housing via Mobility Online. Read more
The Faculties at the University of Helsinki consider every application individually and make the admission decision on the basis of the fully completed application form and enclosures. If you meet the requirements set by the University of Helsinki, your host faculty at UH will send you a confirmation of acceptance by e-mail. Please note that "Formally checked" on Mobility Online does not yet mean that you application has been accepted by the faculty.
Acceptance information is available about 6 weeks after the application deadline.
Please note that during the time when applications are processed, it is not possible to answer individual questions concerning the status of your application. You can follow up the proceedings via your Mobility Online account.
NB! In addition to the host Faculty's acceptance e-mail, university bilateral exchange students, faculty and unit bilateral exchange students and ISEP, AEN, MAUI and North2North exchange students (not Erasmus SMS, Nordplus/Nordlys) will also receive an official, scanned acceptance certificate from the International Exchange Services. This certificate is sent directly to the student and his/her home university's exchange coordinator, and it is needed for the residence permit application.

If your home university does not have a student exchange agreement with the University of Helsinki, but you would like to study at UH for an academic term/semester or year, you can apply for visiting student status (i.e. non-exchange/freemover students). CIMO scholarship recipients and FIRST students should also apply as visiting students.
