Reading club: The Interface Effect by Alexander R. Galloway

The Helsinki Social Computing Group will be hosting a reading group on techno-politics during Spring and Fall 2021. The group meets the last Thursday of every month (except summer) for an hour starting this April (29.4).

This spring we will be reading “The Interface Effect” by Alexander R. Galloway” (2012). In this book the author rather than praising user-friendly interfaces that work well, or castigating those that work poorly, analyzes the political nature of the most emblematic and ubiquitous manifestation of our current digital culture – the interface. Through 5 chapters, Galloway explores how different digital environments (from social media, World of Warcraft to video conferencing spaces) both enable and limit different kinds of political encounters.
