The Museomics Research Group, based at the Kaisaniemi Botanical Garden of the Finnish Museum of Natural History (LUOMUS), is part of the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology (OEB) Research Programme in the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki. We apply cutting-edge genomic approaches to historical DNA (hDNA) from non-model plant species and their associated microbial communities to unravel the evolutionary processes that shape plant biodiversity. Beyond genomics, we integrate interdisciplinary perspectives by linking biological discoveries with handwritten and printed archival records using deep-learning tools — an approach that offers unique insights into the past and creates compelling opportunities for science communication and higher education.
