Indigenous and Sámi studies recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of The Saami: A Cultural Encyclopedia, first published in 2005. Two decades after its release, the work remains one of the most extensive publications documenting core elements, events, and influential figures of Sámi society. On this year’s Saami national day, February 6th, 2026, a panel on the book’s legacy was held in Think Corner and featured a conversation with two of the authors and editors Irja Seurujärvi-Kari and Ulla-Marja Forsberg, moderated by Sámi studies lecturer Ilona Kivinen and Indigenous Studies professor Pirjo Kristiina Virtanen. The encyclopedia offers a comprehensive overview of Sámi history, governance, art, environment, languages, economy, land rights, legislation, health, media, education, and spirituality. Its broad thematic scope has made it a foundational reference for scholars, students, policymakers, and anyone seeking to understand Sámi culture and social structures.

A pioneering aspect of the publication was also its effort to uplift maps with Sámi names and perspectives and give the lives of Sámi early researchers, artists, politicians, and cultural leaders wider recognition and international visibility. As the encyclopedia enters its third decade, it continues to stand as a landmark achievement, highlighting the processes and collectives that have shaped Sámi society across generations.
