Other ways of funding a PhD project is a salary paid by the supervisor or a personal grant from a private foundation applied by the doctoral candidate him/herself. Doctoral candidates may also fund their studies themselves or pursue their degree in tandem with work.

You can apply for the position if you have not yet graduated. In this case, a relevant academic degree (MSc, MD or equivalent) in a field suitable for their thesis project should be completed and obtained no later than 31.12.2018. Please notice that the electronic application form asks you to download a copy of the degree diploma (MSc, MD or equivalent). In you do not yet have obtained the degree diploma, you can download an empty pdf-page.

In addition to the electronic application form, two recommendation letters are required. The recommendation letters are sent using this form. One of the recommendation letters must be from your (intended) supervisor. Also, if you do not yet have a study right, a signed letter of commitment from the supervisor(s), who have agreed to supervise your thesis, is required. The signed letter of commitment has to attached to the electronic application form. Please notice that it is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure that the recommendations are sent by the deadline,  which is 4 October 2018 at 23.59 EEST (UTC+3).

The research plan needs to be written in English. The research plan, if attached as a separate file, should not exceed four pages.

The board of the programme evaluates the applications. No outiside evaluators are used. Candidates may be interviewed before selections.

Applications to the Centre of Excellence of Inverse Modelling and Imaging

Applications to the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Statistics can additionally be addressed to the Centre of Excellence of Inverse Modelling and Imaging. You can indicate this in the application form by filling in the Centre of Excellence for the 'Department or other unit in which the research will be carried out' (under the subtitle Supervision arrangements). Your application will then be evaluated in the usual manner by the board of the doctoral programme but also submitted for evaluation by the Centre of Excellence. The Centre of Excellence is entitled to make an independent proposal on the top candidate to be hired to work on their dissertation within the Centre.

If you are applying for this position, one letter of recommendation is needed in addition to the research plan, study plan, funding plan and CV.

Applications to the Academy of Finland project Frontiers of singular integral

Applications to the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Statistics can additionally be addressed to the Academy of Finland project "Frontiers of Singular Integral".  This position can start on 1 October 2018 or on a later date according to agreement. Due to funding source, the position will terminate on 31 August 2022. In this position you will work in a dynamic team of harmonic analysts and write a dissertation on a topic of high current interest, which will open good possibilities for a postdoctoral career. Your thesis advisor will be Prof. Tuomas Hytönen, but you will also benefit from the interaction with fellow doctoral students, postdocs and more senior researchers in our team. This position is funded by the Academy of Finland project "Frontiers of singular integrals". A successful candidate for this position will have solid previous experience in Analysis (for example courses like real analysis, harmonic analysis, Fourier analysis, functional analysis, and/or bachelor/master theses in related topics).

Travel grants are intended to support doctoral students’ foreign and domestic travel for academic purposes (doctoral courses, learning in other research groups or participating in scientific conferences, seminars or workshops).  All doctoral students belonging to a doctoral programme at the DONASCI doctoral school may apply for travel grants.

Using the e-form you can apply for a travel grant max. 500 euros (ongoing application). Applications for larger sums can only be applied for during fixed application periods.
