Info during your stay

Here you will find information about accommodation, dining, sauna, payments etc. at Tvärminne Zoological Station.

The main building includes the TZS office, lecture rooms, research laboratories, aquarium rooms, a workshop, offices for scientists and staff members, and a restaurant for 70 people. For accommodation, we offer 20 twin bedrooms in the student dormitory, 10 twin bedrooms and 2 single rooms in the scientists’ dormitory, 10 single and one double room in the Pavilion and 10-30 additional beds in other buildings, some of which are only used in summer. A few larger flats are available for scientists who are accompanied by their families.

Please note that TZS is located by the sea, relatively far away from the nearest public services. For people staying overnight the basic services such as kitchens, sauna, and laundry room are available.

Reception

The reception is located on the first floor of the main building. The office handles all matters concerning board and lodging at the station.

Unique products for sale

At the reception you can also find nice and unique products especially made for Tvärminne Zoological Station. You will find t-shirts, hoodies for children, college shirts for adults, tea towels, books and postcards among other things. Welcome!

Accommodation

There are several accommodation buildings at TZS. Please ask about availability of different rooms and family apartments from the reception. Accommodation includes linen and towels, except in the master students price category. It is possible to bring your own linen and towels, but note that sleeping bags are not allowed at the station.

Check in and check out

Upon arrival you can get your key and door code from the reception during office hours on working days 9am - 3pm . If you arrive outside of office hours, please inform the reception well in advance and get the instructions for check in. Check out during weekdays is by 10 am, if not agreed otherwise. During the weekends there is no check out time, you can leave your key in the post box next to the reception door.

Payments

Accommodation and dining costs can be paid in the reception during office hours (cash or card). You can also pay your meals directly to the cash desk at the restaurant (card payments only). Invoicing is possible if agreed beforehand.

Restaurant and dining

The restaurant is located in the main building, on the ground floor. It seats approximately 70 persons and it is also possible to buy food to take away and small snacks. Please inform the kitchen about your participation in meals and dietary preferences and allergies in advance. During the weekends the restaurant is normally closed with the exception when the station hosts larger courses and seminars.

Cooking

All the dormitories and family apartments have a kitchen equipped with basic kitchenware for guests staying overnight.

Sauna

TZS has a large sauna with all year round access to the sea. The sauna is heated for guests staying overnight on Wednesdays and Saturdays. On other days the sauna can be booked separately.

Pets

There are unfortunately no pet friendly rooms available in the dormitories. There is a limited number of separate rooms and family apartments where pets are allowed.

Please ask for pet friendly accommodation from the office.

Laundry room

There are two laundry rooms at the station. In the Pavilion dormitory there are two drying cabinets, a washing machine, and a dryer. In the service building there is a drying room, a washing machine, and a dryer. Washing machines function with 1 € coins. The cost is 1€ per wash, including laundry detergent and the use of a dryer or a drying room.

Public services

Tvärminne Zoological Station is located approximately 17 km from Hanko and 30 km from Tammisaari. Nearest shops and public services are in Hanko. There is no public transport to or from the station. Nearest train station is at Lappohja, approximately 11 km from the station.

Nature reserve

Please note that the area around Tvärminne Zoological Station, including islands, is protected as a nature conservation area. In this area, sampling of material, berries, plants, or animals is not allowed without a permit, also fishing is prohibited. Walk along tracks in the area. Visiting islands is only allowed for research purposes.
