The Global Media Monitoring Project, GMMP is unique as a global research project but also as a multi-stakeholder effort. While the composition of the teams working for each round of research, and each country, may be different, the core philosophy is that research is an inclusive activity, a form of activism in and of itself. The researchers comprise women’s rights groups large and small, other civil society organizations, universities, and other researchers, as well as individual journalists and various journalism associations.
Every five years since 1995, GMMP research has monitored selected indicators of gender in news media, studying women’s presence in relation to men, gender bias, and stereotyping in news media content. The fifth piece of research in the series was conducted in 2015 by hundreds of volunteers in 114 countries around the world.
Global Media Monitoring Project Finland is the national project of the global research and advocacy effort GMMP. The Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki has been involved in the project since 1995 and hosted it since 2000.
One of the core findings, in a nutshell, is that the disparity in gender representation is a universal phenomenon and that not that much has changed over the years or, indeed, decades.
In Finland, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has supported the project for two research rounds, in 2015 and 2020. GMMP has also been used in the creation of a toolkit for media professionals (the Screening Gender project of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yle, together with four other Northern European broadcasters in 1995).
