GC-MS procurement and study protocol progress

In November, we successfully purchased the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) laboratory machine at the University of Nairobi. We also continued meeting frequently with the supplier to finalize the purchase at the Lúrio University. Our team also finalized the FoodLeader study protocol related to the upcoming practical learning and data collection from the primary schools in Nairobi, Kenya and Nampula Province, Mozambique. The next step involves submitting the protocol for ethical reviews in Kenya and Mozambique.

Annual monitoring surveys were conducted

The coordinators conducted annual monitoring surveys, including the Annual Leadership survey for the selected institution leaders and the Human Rights Assessment Survey for the project members. The Annual Leadership Survey aims is to assess the satisfaction of the leadership of the impacts of the FoodLeader project, and it is one project indicator in the Higher Education Partnership Programmes. The Human Rights Assessment survey aims to assess human rights awareness within the FoodLeader project. The team developed the survey based on the Ministry for Foreign Affairs Finland Human rights-based approach in development cooperation.

Southern partners mobility to the University of Helsinki

In November, Prof. Catherine Kunyanga from the University of Nairobi travelled to Finland as part of the Early Career Championship Program. As part of the program seminar, the FoodLeader project was also presented to the program participants. Additionally, the team organized a FoodLeader project dinner in Helsinki for the team members located in Helsinki.

EDUFI monitoring meeting and stakeholder engagament

November 1st, the EDUFI visited University of Helsinki during a monitoring meeting as part of the Higher Education Partnership Programme. The aim of the full-day meeting was to discuss the project’s progress, administration and possible challenges. In addition to the FoodLeader members, two leaders from the University of Helsinki participated in the meeting. Overall, the monitoring meeting was successful and the FoodLeader project received good feedback.

Summary of the achievements
  • The FoodLeader study protocol was finalized: The protocol is now ready to be sent for the ethical review in Kenya and Mozambique.
  • The annual monitoring surveys were conducted: The Human Rights Assessment Survey was conducted for the project members and Annual Leadership Survey for two leaders from each institution.
  • The GC-MS equipment purchase at University of Nairobi: The University of Nairobi purchased the GC-MS machine and currently planning its delivery.
  • Project dinner in Helsinki: The FoodLeader members located in Helsinki in November organized a project dinner together.
