About COVERE²

COVERE² stands for "Collecting, verifying, reporting and reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions". In this project, the team will develop a solution to collect and verify the GHG emissions data in agri-food production, as the greatest potential for GHG emissions reduction in the European Union is to be found in the agricultural sector. During the piloting phase, the focus will be on the milk and dairy industry.

Agricultural companies face several challenges in reaching their net zero goals, such as a lack of fast, simple, and comprehensive traceability of the environmental footprint and low quality of available data. The solution to be developed tackles those challenges, by offering a precise granularity and verification of GHG emissions data. In addition, our solution offers a unique and comprehensive analysis of their electricity consumption and related GHG emissions. Thanks to the technology of ELEKS’ product DAKAR, agricultural companies will be provided with tracking and mapping of the energy sources and will be well-informed and equipped to define and implement changes towards more sustainable energy consumption.

The demand for the solution is driven by new regulations, such as the EU Directive on Green Claims and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and by stakeholders’ and customers’ willingness to buy sustainable products.

The project will run for two years (2023-2025), divided into four phases, from product development, and market research, to the piloting phase at a research farm in Viikki Finland, an extensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and market launch, including sales, marketing, and business development. The solution is easily scalable to other industries, and the team is already working on exciting developments for the future beyond the project’s scope!
