From the project
COVERE² — standing for COllecting, VErifying, REducing, and REporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions — was an EIT Food Research and Innovation project running from 2023 to 2025, co-funded by the European Union through the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT Food).
The project set out to develop a solution to collect and verify GHG emissions data in agri-food production, where the greatest potential for emissions reduction in the European Union lies. During the piloting phase, the focus was on the milk and dairy industry.
The consortium was led by the University of Helsinki, alongside ELEKS, a world-leading expert in software innovation; Vitagora, an agri-food innovation cluster from France; and the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST).

Building on the research and pilots conducted during the project, COVERE² has since evolved into a commercial sustainability platform designed to help organizations move from compliance to impact.
The platform offers end-to-end sustainability services - from Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) and data collection to environment, social and governance (ESG) reporting, auditing, and disclosure - all grounded in science-based methodology and verified primary data. Originally built and validated in the agri-food sector, the solution is now scalable across industries.
COVERE² is powered by ELEKS and guided by a Scientific Advisory Board that includes Professor Mari Sandell, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Helsinki.
