University of Helsinki Doctoral School opens nearly 200 doctoral researcher positions

The Doctoral School will recruit new doctoral researchers for both three-year positions in the doctoral education pilot and four-year positions funded by the University.

The University of Helsinki Doctoral School will organise two separate calls for applications to funded doctoral researcher positions between August 27 and September 9. The vacancies include positions funded by the University of Helsinki, for which an application procedure is organised every year, as well as those under the fall application round for the national Doctoral Education Pilot.

Both calls will be organised through the University’s recruitment system. Applicants must have concluded supervision agreements before submitting their applications. Applicants can take part in both application rounds if they meet the criteria for both rounds.

The University-funded positions open in all doctoral programmes

The doctoral researcher positions funded by the University are aimed at enabling full-time work on doctoral theses and studies so that the appointees will graduate in four years. It is not necessary for the applicants to have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, but they must be prepared to obtain one during a six-month trial period.

The emphasis in the assessment of applications is on scientific excellence of the research plan and implementation of the research project. The research project described in the application must be justified and must match the research profile of the chosen doctoral programme. In addition, applicants’ qualifications will be assessed. For detailed information on the application and the required attachments, see the instructions for students

64 positions open in the fall application round for the Doctoral Education Pilot

The doctoral researcher positions in the national Doctoral Education Pilot are open to those whose right to pursue a doctoral degree became valid no earlier than in November 2023 or who have not yet been granted such a right by the University of Helsinki.

There are a total of 64 doctoral researcher positions available in the autumn’s application round. These positions are available only in those pilot consortia whose vacancies were not filled in the spring call. For detailed information on Doctoral Education Pilot’s goals, application guidelines and open positions, see the website of the Doctoral Education Pilot at the University of Helsinki

Funded doctoral researcher positions are one of the key forms of support through which the University of Helsinki Doctoral School supports the career advancement of junior researchers. Besides funded positions, the doctoral school offers other forms of support to all doctoral students, including travel grants, teaching in generic academic skills and various events.
