The University of Helsinki’s Kumpula Campus can now be visited virtually, for example, from the comfort of your home. The Kumpula Virtual Experience website offers a selection of interactive videos that take the viewer for a tour of the research and teaching facilities found on the campus. The videos can be viewed also using VR headsets compatible with YouTube videos.

A total of five tours of the campus facilities and laboratories are available, with research equipment from lasers to particle accelerators on show. Viewers also get the chance to have a look at scientists carrying out their everyday work.

“We wish to offer an opportunity not dependent on time or place to get to know Kumpula Campus and our research facilities. The videos are suited to anyone interested in science, starting from schoolchildren,” says Samuli Siltanen, vice-dean for public engagement at the Faculty of Science.

“The experience also provides access to locations where the public cannot physically be admitted for safety and security reasons. For example, work that involves radioactive substances and laser beams cannot be observed in ordinary public tours,” Siltanen says.
