The opening celebration offers a glimpse into what the more than 200 organisations under the Student Union do. The organisations will have stalls in the Main Building and Porthania. In addition, University of Helsinki alumni, the University’s Green Team and the Helsinki University Library will be in attendance. The rector’s coffee service for students will be set up in the Main Building at 15–17.
Acoustic music in the courtyard
The courtyard of the Main Building will host Helmut, the University of Helsinki student organisation for live music, and its ensembles Korpolompolo and Lapsus Lupus will perform at 14.00.
“If we can gather enough musicians and keep up the groove, we may wind up having a jam,” hints Aleksi Saastamoinen, third year medical student and chair of Helmut.
You can come to the courtyard to enjoy the music with lunch, for example.
“We’re of course hoping for new active members, or anyone who’s enthusiastic about joining us. The University is full of musicians and music lovers, so Helmut is sure to cater to many different tastes.”
Sports, music and dining on the streets
The stage in front of Porthania will feature different student choirs, the Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra and the arts students’ speksi play. The vice-chair of the Student Union and the vice-rector of the University will also give speeches on the stage. The master of ceremonies for the Porthania stage will be the Student Union’s freshman chancellor.
UniSport martial artists will demonstrate their skills on Yliopistonkatu in front of the stage. The HYTKY association for electronic music will play music at their tent.
The now traditional academic sit-down street dinner will be organised on Fabianinkatu in front of the Main Building at 14.30. During the dinner, members of the Student Union’s Committee for Organisational Affairs will introduce participants to academic party traditions, including toasts and drinking songs.
