The ability to express causes, reasons and justifications is essential for language use. Causality appears in all kinds of texts/discourse and it can be marked for example by causal connectives and prepositions or by means of asyndetic constructions. The expression of cause has been examined in a variety of studies dealing with e.g. different types of causality or causal markers in one particular language or several languages. Causality is also closely related to other logical relations such as condition, concession, contrast and purpose.
The research community CoCoLaC (Comparing and Contrasting Languages and Cultures, University of Helsinki) wishes to contribute to the discussion of these matters by organizing a seminar titled “Types and Expressions of Causal and other Logical Relations” on Friday 21stOctober at the University of Helsinki (room 7, Metsätalo – Unioninkatu 40).
The seminar is organized by Mikko Haule and Eva Havu. The invited speakers are Liesbeth Degand (Université catholique de Louvain) and Ted Sanders (Universiteit Utrecht).
