At the moment, Väänänen works as dean of the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Science.
“The University is changing. We are implementing the Big Wheel, our degree programme reform, the faculties are abolishing departments, and we are continuing to stabilise our finances. I want to help the University to successfully carry out these changes,” he says.
Digitalising a European top university
As vice-rector, Väänänen’s main areas of responsibility will be the University’s research affairs and doctoral education. He continues the work of Vice-Rector Keijo Hämäläinen, who will become the rector of the University of Jyväskylä on 1 August 2017.
As vice-rector, Väänänen will strive to promote three issues: excellence in research, the University’s internationalisation and its prudent digitalisation.
“I primarily look at the University of Helsinki as a European top university. The environment in which it operates has been dramatically changed by the internet, digitalisation and social media. There is fierce competition over the best researchers and research funding, and students also choose their universities from an international selection.”
