EcoHum English Reading Group (in English)

You are warmly welcome to the first session of the EcoHum English Reading Group on Thursday 21st May, at 15.15-16.45 in the meeting room Metsätalo B427 (in person). The discussion will be held in English.

For the first meeting, we will read Elizabeth M. DeLoughrey (2019) . Duke University Press. [open access]

It is very understandable if reading a whole book by the late May might be challenging. In that case, please read the introduction, the conclusions (chapter number 5), and if possible, one chapter based on your own preference.

 

To politely invite us to extend beyond the Euro-American based discussions, I would like to propose that in this reading group we could focus on reading literature that problematizes the fields of ecological humanities from the postcolonial, decolonial, Global South and Indigenous perspectives, among others. In addition, it would be amazing if we could aim to read books instead of articles.

We will decide on the reading list and the forthcoming three meetings in the autumn semester together. Please feel free to send your suggestions regarding the literature via email () so I can compile a tentative list to be discussed in the first meeting. Here are some books that I’d like to suggest for consideration – but only to inspire further discussion:

  • Rob Nixon, Slow violence and the environmentalism of the poor (2011); acquisition proposal made
  • Huggan, Graham, and Helen Tiffin. .

The Ekohum reading and meditation group (in Finnish)

(Only in Finnish, since the reading circle is held in Finnish. Everyone is welcome regardless of the level of their language skills!)

Tervetuloa suomenkieliseen läsnälukupiiriin, jossa tutustumme ekologisen humanismin teemoihin osallistujien kiinnostusten ehdoilla. Tapaamme vuoden 2026 aikana viisi kertaa, joten voit kirjata seuraavat päivämäärät kalenteriisi jo nyt: 17.4., 26.5., 3.9., 30.10. ja 1.12.

Mitä luemme? Päätämme siitä yhdessä. Ensimmäisen tapaamisen jälkeen pyydämme jokaista osallistujaa tuomaan omia ehdotuksiaan lukupiiriin; tapaamisen lopuksi äänestämme, mitä luetaan seuraavaksi. Kannustamme tarjoamaan myös muuta inspiroivaa ennakkomateriaalia – vaikkapa kuvataidetta, runoja tai lyhytproosaa – tieteellisten artikkeleiden rinnalle.

Meditaatio? Jokaisen tapaamisen aluksi väitöskirjatutkija ja joogaopettaja Lotta Leiwo ohjaa noin 10 minuutin rentoutus- tai meditaatiohetken, jonka avulla (mahdollinen) kiire vaihtuu läsnäoloksi ja keskusteluun on helpompi laskeutua keskittyneesti.

Ensimmäinen tapaaminen pidetään 17.4. klo 13–14.15 Topeliassa 2. kerroksen Seminaarihuoneessa C219 (Unioninkatu 38, käynti C-rapusta).

  • Tutustu tieteellisen artikkelin lisäksi Helsingin Sanomien 2.3.2026 julkaistuun juttuun ”” ja sen kuvitukseen.

Lukiessasi voit pohtia esimerkiksi seuraavia kysymyksiä:

  • Mitä ”jäljen jättämisen”, ”pinnan” ja ”tietämisen” ilmentymiä teksteissä käsitellään?
  • Miten Ingoldin ajatukset suhteutuvat omaan tutkimusaiheeseesi tai tutkimuksen tekemiseen ylipäätään?
  • Mitä ajatuksia tai kysymyksiä artikkelin lukeminen herätti suhteessa ekologiseen humanismiin (siten kuin sen itse ymmärrät)?
