Ecological Humanities

The Network for Ecological Humanism (Ekohum) brings together researchers and teachers interested in ecological research in humanities. The aim is to support interdisciplinary research and teaching collaboration by, among other things, organizing network meetings, seminars and reading circles.

Ecological humanism is an emerging trend that crosses the boundaries of scientific disciplines. Its impact is visible in different research fields in different ways, both methodologically and theoretically, for example in language studies as an ecolinguistic trend and in literary studies as an ecocritical trend. More broadly, ecological humanism is part of the sustainability transition and posthumanist turn in research.

There is no established community or systematic research in the field of ecological humanism at the University of Helsinki yet. The research network, which will be built during 2026 with the help of HSSH's Catalyst Grant funding, is an open community for those interested in the themes and development of the field.
