Nuclear test ban

Seismological methods are one of the most effective in detecting and locating underground nuclear explosions. Therefore, since 1976, Institute of Seismology has participated as a scientific specialist in the expert group of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

International monitoring system has been set up in order to monitor potential nuclear tests. A seismic array station in Sysmä, Finland was founded in 1985 and is one of the primary stations in the network. A secured satellite network is used to transfer the data to the International Data Centre of CTBTO , headquartered in Vienna, Austria.
