May 11: Alumni Science Book Club: Racism, Power and Resistance

Time: 11.5. at 4 pm - 6 pm (EET)
Place: Zoom (The link will be sent to registrants by email)

Everyday racism is often subtle and not appalling. Many don’t even understand their behavior as racist. Racism permeates Finnish society as an everyday and experiential phenomenon, but it is also an institutional and structural problem. The Black Lives Matter movement has also sparked a debate here and has shown that many people need information that is specifically adapted to the Finnish environment and based on research. Who can or must talk about racism?

The book Racism, Power and Resistance - Racialization, whiteness and coloniality in Finland presents racism and colonialism in Finnish society and their global connections.

Welcome to Alumni Science Book Club to hear Suvi Keskinen, Minna Seikkula and Faith Mkwesha (ed.) talk about their book. Lasse Leminen (Gaudeamus) interviews.

The event is in English.

In the Alumni Science Book Club, alumni and writers meet on current topics and interesting discussions. It is organized in co-operation with the University of Helsinki's publishing house Gaudeamus.

We follow the instructions of the University of Helsinki in a corona situation, which is why the Alumni Science Book Club is organized online using the Zoom program. To participate, you need a computer / mobile phone / tablet with Zoom and an internet connection.
