GlobalSMEAR is an initiative towards integrated Earth observatory initiated by Academician Markku Kulmala and coordinated by INAR. It is collaborating with the European research infrastructures such as ICOS, ACTRIS, ANAEE and eLTER. GlobalSMEAR approach is based the "Stations Measuring Earth Surfaces and Atmosphere Relations" (SMEAR) concept, which has been developed at the flagship observatory "SMEAR II" in Finland (61°51' N, 24°17' E) with the longest and most comprehensive measurement series in the world on atmospheric aerosols and energy flows since 1995. A long-term vision is to have, within 10-15 years, a network of 600-1000 highly instrumented environmental observatories carrying out observations on Earth surface - atmosphere relations: concentrations, profiles, fluxes, processes and feedbacks across disciplines.
SMEAR-like stations outside Finland:
SMEAR Estonia: Station in Järvselja, Estonia. The station measures concentrations and fluxes of energy and matter in the atmosphere—biosphere system. SMEAR Estonia is part of Estonian Roadmap Project (Estonian Environmental Observatory) and it is operated by Estonian University of Life Sciences.
SORPES-NJU: Station in Nanjing, China. It is a Station for Observing Regional Processes of the Earth System. The station is operated in collaboration with Nanjing University and University of Helsinki under joint international research laboratory of Atmospheric and Earth System Sciences (JirLATEST).

Tiksi Hydrometeorological Observatory: The station is located in the Russian far East. The facility has been developed through a partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet), and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
