FIMM spin-off companies and licensing

With the help of Helsinki Innovation Services Ltd (HIS), FIMM researchers have been able to commercialise their research resealts through licensing, applying for patents and establishing spinout companies.
Aiforia Technologies Ltd

Aiforia Technologies (formerly known as FIMMIC) was founded as a spin-off company from FIMM in 2013 by researchers and pioneers in the field of cloud-based microscopy and pathology, Johan and Mikael Lundin, and experienced life science entrepreneur Kari Pitkänen. Aiforia is a first-in-class, versatile cloud-based platform that increases the speed, accuracy and consistency of analyzing large and complex medical images across a variety of fields.

The technology, based on deep-learning AI, is intuitive and only requires an internet connection and the user’s own domain knowledge to begin training AI models. Aiforia assists with the increased demand for image-based diagnostics by providing efficient and scalable solutions – enabling new discoveries, clinical support and highly accurate and consistent data.

MediSapiens

MediSapiens was founded in 2009 by FIMM researchers Olli KallioniemiSami Kilpinen and Henrik Edgren, and today has offices in Helsinki, Finland and Cambridge, MA, USA. The company has a strong scientific background in bioinformatics and genomics. Everything started with IST Online: The world’s largest unified gene expressions database, full of curated, integrated and harmonized data to be used by scientists for health discoveries.

The underlying goal of MediSapiens has always been to facilitate the use, analysis and interpretation of biomedical data by powerful digital and data technologies with the help of visual, intuitive web-based user interfaces. This sentiment has enabled the company to grow and expand their services and solutions across life science and biomedical businesses and research.

VEIL.AI

VEIL.AI anonymization engine is a novel, powerful approach to de-identify personal or otherwise sensitive data, facilitate sharing and analyzing data in low or zero-trust environments and ensure that neither anonymity nor data quality is compromised.

The VEIL.AI service enables potentially sensitive individual-level information to be used in various research and development projects as well as commercial applications. VEIL.AI processes information without affecting the value of collected data sets, but ensuring that individuals can no longer be identified. The application thus enables the information to be utilised for new purposes and by new users.

VEIL.AI is a recently established spin-out company from FIMM, developed under the leadership of Janna Saarela and Timo Miettinen.

Mobile microscopy scanner for PoC diagnostics

Dr. Johan Lundin and his team has developed a Mobile Microscope, MoMic, for point-of-care diagnostics. MoMic allows high resolution imaging, comparable to existing laboratory-based microscopy scanners. The platform is suitable for diverse diagnostic purposes including tissue analytics, cervical PAP smears, intra-operative frozen section analysis, and infectious diseases, mainly parasitic diseases and malaria. MoMic is combined with automated image analysis and pathologists’ remote consultation through wireless connections and uploading the sample images to a cloud server and using artificial intelligence analysis tools in the cloud to speed up interpretation and diagnosis.
