Training

HiLIFE and its units are involved in several educational and training activities. Below you can find more information on the activities supported by the institute, and more unit-specific activities are listed in the unit subpages. Several of the HiLIFE training activities listed here are coordinated by the HiLIFE EDU committee.
HILIFE TRAINEE PROGRAMS

The HiLIFE Trainee programs support UH BSc, MSc and Lic (Med, Med Vet, Dentistry) students in their journey to become scientists.

Practical research training during undergraduate BSc, MSc and Lic (Med, Vet Med, Dentistry) studies can be an empowering experience. HiLIFE Research Trainee Scholarships offer an opportunity to conduct a research training period at a life science research group as a part of voluntary studies (particularly BSc/MSc/Lic thesis). The research group can be selected either at the University of Helsinki or at another research institute abroad. The scholarships are granted once per year.

The call for 2024 trainees has closed on 8.10.2023, and we are currently going through the process of selecting our new HiLIFE Research Trainee Scholarship recipients.

Interviews for selected applicants take place in early November, and the recipients of HiLIFE Research Trainee Scholarship will be announced by mid-November 2023.

For any questions, reach out to hilife-edu@helsinki.fi.

HiLIFE offers funding to support BSc and MSc students interested in attending conferences or courses/training on an annual/biannual basis. The topics covered in the conference/training should revolve around the field of life sciences or help you further your career in a life science field.

The grant is intended to be used for the registration costs of the conference/course. If attending the selected conference/course requires travelling, the applicants should be prepared to secure other means of funding to cover those costs.

The latest call closed on December 5, 2022 and the selected conference grant recipients were contacted during mid-December 2022.

SUPPORT FOR HILIFE POSTDOCS

HiLIFE has established a postdoc council with members from the Viikki Postdoc Association (ViPA), NC, and FIMM. The goal of this council is to connect postdocs working in different HiLIFE units, as well as share resources and support with the whole HiLIFE postdoc community.

Currently, NC postdocs are represented in HiLIFE EDU committee by Felix Siebenhühner (felix.siebenhuhner@helsinki.fi). Additionally, an enquiring process to have FIMM postdoc association representative joining the committee is ongoing at the moment.

HiLIFE is offering funding for conference travel to postdoctoral researchers (career level 2) affiliated with HiLIFE, interested in attending conferences during 2024. (See further information on career path hierarchy and levels on Flamma).

You are eligible for the grant if

  • You are a career postdoctoral researcher in a unit that is funded by or associated with HiLIFE (crediting its publications to HiLIFE).
  • You have not been awarded this grant in the past.

The topics covered in the conference should revolve around the field of life sciences or help you further your career in a life science field. We also expect you to apply to give a poster presentation or a talk during the conference.

This grant, of max. €800 (within Europe) and €1300 (other continents), is intended to be used for the registration and travel costs of the conference. If the total costs are higher than what is covered by the grant, the remaining costs need to be covered by personal funding and/or by your research group. Please note that the grant will be issued as a refund after you have attended the selected conference. Also, as of Jan 1st 2022, per diems are payable for work-related travel at the University of Helsinki for those in salaried positions – you will be asked to add the costs for this to the application form. The per diem guidelines can be found on Finnish Tax Administration site.

HiLIFE has secured funding to support ca. 10 postdocs. If the number of eligible applicants is higher than the amount of grants that HiLIFE can provide, grantees will be selected using a lottery system. Please note that any requests for changing the originally selected conference are subject to approval by the HiLIFE EDU committee and must take place within the calendar year 2024.

We encourage postdocs to also apply for travel grants from other funding sources (e.g. from the conference organizers). If you apply for this grant and receive another travel grant for the same event, please let us know immediately.

Please submit your application for a conference travel grant via this Elomake form by 4.00pm EEST on April 2, 2024.

The HiLIFE EDU committee reviews the applications and announces the decisions on grant recipients by the end of April 2024.
