Training

HiLIFE and its units are involved in several educational and training activities. Below you can find more information on the activities supported by the institute, and more unit-specific activities are listed in the unit subpages. Several of the HiLIFE training activities listed here are coordinated by the HiLIFE EDU committee.
HILIFE TRAINEE PROGRAMS

The HiLIFE Trainee programs support UH BSc, MSc and Lic (Med, Med Vet, Dentistry) students in their journey to become scientists.

Practical research training during undergraduate BSc, MSc and Lic (Med, Vet Med, Dentistry) studies can be an empowering experience. HiLIFE Research Trainee Scholarships offer an opportunity to conduct a research training period at a life science research group as a part of voluntary studies (particularly BSc/MSc/Lic thesis). The research group can be selected either at the University of Helsinki or at another research institute abroad. The scholarships are granted once per year.

The call for 2024 trainees is currently open and applications are accepted during 4.9.-8.10.2023 (form closing 23.59 EEST).

Interviews for selected applicants take place in early November, and the recipients of HiLIFE Research Trainee Scholarship will be announced by mid-November 2023.

For any questions, reach out to hilife-edu@helsinki.fi or join us for an info session held in Biomedicum, Meilahti campus on Monday 25.9.2023.

HiLIFE offers funding to support BSc and MSc students interested in attending conferences or courses/training on an annual/biannual basis. The topics covered in the conference/training should revolve around the field of life sciences or help you further your career in a life science field.

The grant is intended to be used for the registration costs of the conference/course. If attending the selected conference/course requires travelling, the applicants should be prepared to secure other means of funding to cover those costs.

The latest call closed on December 5, 2022 and the selected conference grant recipients were contacted during mid-December 2022.

SUPPORT FOR HILIFE POSTDOCS

HiLIFE has established a postdoc council with members from the Viikki Postdoc Association (ViPA), NC, and FIMM. The goal of this council is to connect postdocs working in different HiLIFE units, as well as share resources and support with the whole HiLIFE postdoc community.

Currently, NC postdocs are represented in HiLIFE EDU committee by Felix Siebenhühner (felix.siebenhuhner@helsinki.fi). Additionally, an enquiring process to have FIMM postdoc association representative joining the committee is ongoing at the moment.

On March 2023 call, HiLIFE offered funding for conference travel to postdoctoral researchers (career level 2) affiliated with HiLIFE, interested in attending conferences during 2023.

Further to the eligibility for the grant, we required the applicants to be career postdoctoral researchers in a unit that is funded by or associated with HiLIFE (crediting its publications to HiLIFE).

The topics covered in the conference were to revolve around the field of life sciences or help the applicant further his/her career in a life science field. We also expected the postdocs to apply for giving a poster presentation or a talk during the conference.

The grant, of max. €800 (within Europe) and €1300 (other continents), is to be used for the registration and travel costs of the conference and it will be issued as a refund after the postdoc has attended the selected conference.

The latest call closed on April 5th and the grant recipients were contacted during mid-April 2023. HiLIFE secured funding to support a total of 13 postdocs. As the number of eligible applicants was higher than the amount of grants that HiLIFE could provide, grantees were selected using a lottery system.
