Terhi Ainiala is a Finnish-language University lecturer at the University of Helsinki and researcher in onomastics, the study of names. Her main research field is socio-onomastics, which deals with the function of names and variation in naming, along with the connection between a name and society. The range of signification of names for their users, and the relation between names and identity form part of socio-onomastic research. Ainiala is currently investigating how place names serve to construct various urban identities. Slang names close to Ainiala’s heart are Hesa (Helsinki) and Vuokki (Vuosaari, the eastern district of Helsinki).
