Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of bacteria, archaea, fungi and viruses. Basic research on microbiology and ecology as well as microbiological applications in agriculture and forestry, food production, medicine, environmental sciences and microbial biotechnology are at the heart of our research.

Microbiology has its own master’s and doctoral program. A master’s degree in microbiology can be chosen by starting studies either in molecular biosciences, food sciences, environmental sciences or biology in the bachelor’s degree program. A master's degree can focus on food microbiology, environmental microbiology, mycobiology, medical microbiology, virology, or microbial biotechnology. Microbiology is taught on the Viikki campus as a cross-border joint program of two faculties (Agriculture and Forestry, and Biological and Environmental Sciences).

Graduates with master's or doctoral degrees in microbiology find work as researchers and experts in research institutes, industry, hospital and quality control laboratories, and in administration and teaching.
