Honorary doctorate to Detlef Weigel, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen

Director Detlef Weigel is visiting Helsinki on the occasion of Conferment Ceremony of the Faculty of Philosophy, receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki on 26 May 2023. Director Weigel is at present at the forefront of plant genetics and genomics, and molecular biology.

Weigel is currently the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen, Germany. His research is focused on understanding how the genetic variations arise in natural populations and how they contribute to plant adaptation and evolution.

Over the course of three decades, Weigel has published numerous outstanding papers in top journals and received several awards and honors for his contributions to the field of plant biology, development, evolution.

In addition, Detlef Weigel has been and will be a member of the University of Helsinki HiLife Scienctific Council 2022-2026.

Detlef Weigel will be awarded an honorary doctorate on 26 May in the University Ballroom at the Faculty of Philosophy's graduation ceremony, which will take place this year for the 100th time. The first graduation took place in 1643.

An honorary doctorate is the highest honour conferred by the university. Honorary Doctorates are awarded to persons who have made a significant contribution to society and to the activities of the University of Helsinki.

Weigel will also hold a seminar on Thursday 25 May, 2023 at 10.00 titled “Plant Paranoia”.
