Forest Economics, Business and Society

The discipline of forest economics, business and society investigates interconnections between forests, the economy and society. Research in the discipline develops solutions for a sustainable natural resource economy, forest management and policy, as well as the transformation of business operations and the biosociety.
What we study

We study how forests and the value chains based on them affect society, the economy and the environment. We examine the economic, social and political significance of forests and develop solutions to promote a sustainable bioeconomy.

Our key research areas include the economic and ecological optimisation of forest resources, the business models of the biological and circular economy, forest management and control, as well as fair and sustainable societal change. We also analyse questions of politics and power related to forest use on both the domestic and international levels.

Why we study

Forests hold economic, ecological and social significance, and their use is associated with climate change, economic development and social justice.

Our research produces knowledge that helps solve challenges in the sustainable use of natural resources and supports the transition towards a responsible bioeconomy. The goal is to support decision-making and develop operating models that combine ecological sustainability, financial efficiency and social responsibility.

How we study

Our multidisciplinary research combines the methods of economics, ecology, political science and social sciences. We employ both quantitative and qualitative approaches, such as financial and econometric analyses, life-cycle and decision analyses, surveys, interviews and case studies. Research is conducted in Finland and abroad, in cooperation with universities, research institutes, businesses and decision-makers. Topics are examined both in local communities as well as on the global market and forest policy level.
