Welcome from the programme

The programme steering group, our staff and students congratulate you for being accepted to the Master’s Programme in Pharmaceutical Research, Development and Safety!

We warmly welcome you as a member of our multidisciplinary and multicultural community. Our faculty members originate from six different continents and almost half of us have an international background.

Teaching and learning in our programme occurs in close collaboration with the faculty’s internationally recognized research groups. Our faculty is also well known for the use of student-centered teaching methods and pioneering work in integrating sustainability themes into the curricula.

We invite you to take full advantage of these opportunities and look forward to working with you.

Starting your studies

A solid background knowledge in Pharmacy is required to get out the most of the autumn term. Depending on your background, you may want to polish your knowledge in cell biology, pharmacology and pharmaceutical chemistry. We will provide you with book recommendations during the spring. Do not hesitate to contact us for other advise.

The studies in the programme start with a 25 ECT module 'Drug development and use'. Throughout the autumn term, the three courses of this module will make you familiar with the whole life cycle of drugs from the very first steps of starting a discovery process for a new drug to the principles of rational drug use and environmental risk assessment. In parallel with these studies, each student will get a chance to join one of the faculty’s research groups for the autumn term and earn credits by learning the basics of good research practice.

In the spring term, the studies will continue with study track specific methodological courses and optional studies which will be planned in collaboration with a personal supervisor.

Ask our students

Do you wonder what it is like to study at the University of Helsinki? How is student life or housing in the City of Helsinki?

You can also chat directly with our students Granta, Achmet & Iman or other University of Helsinki students on our chat platform. However, note that for questions related to admissions you should contact the Admission Services.

The student blog on the chat platform is also a great way to get an overview of student life in Helsinki.

Orientation and tutoring

The teaching officially starts on 2 September 2024, but you should participate in the orientation activities for the new students already before classes begin (Orientation week 26 August – 1 September). You will be assigned to a tutor group led by a senior student, or student tutor. You will learn more about studying in our programme and get support with administrative matters. This will make it easier for you to start your studies and life in Helsinki.

The detailed information concerning the orientation and student tutors will be published in the Instructions for students latest in mid-August. During summer, you will also find on the same page the welcome letter by the tutors including information about the orientation activities and introduction sessions. Prepare for a full week of activities.

Learning environments

The Faculty of Pharmacy is located on Viikki Campus at Biocenter 2. The verdant and multidisciplinary Viikki Campus has operated in front lines of the life sciences since 1946. It employs nearly 1,900 people and has more than 6,000 students. Characteristic to the area are broad fields and the bay of Vanhankaupunginlahti, a popular outdoor recreational area among the citizens.

As our student, you will have access to the modern studying facilities of the campus. You are welcome to join the faculty’s research labs starting from the first week of your studies, a unique opportunity to learn by following our staff members in their research work.

Our curriculum also facilitates external internships in pharmaceutical industry and other non-academic settings. International exchange is available via the University of Helsinki mobility programme and our own global network of collaborating research groups.

UNITalent Programme

The international students in the Master's Programme in pharmaceutical research, development and safety can apply to the UNITalent Programme. It is designed to support international students in building professional networks in Finland and to gain insight into field specific working life. Students take part by attending monthly group meetings with hosting organisation for a period of three months.
